I discovered Hua Chenyu here, I came because I heard Jessie J was in a Chinese show and I am Chinese even though my Chinese is poor AF but I was curious. Became the biggest fan of Hua Chenyu, enjoyed Jessie J’s classical performances and found KZ as well. I like her but I am not a “fan” because I am only invested in Queen and Hua Chenyu

If this is your first time to see this show, don’t assume this was a slam dunk for Jessie J. She was dominant only for the first three episodes but things changed when a “new kid” (Hua Chenyu) joined the 4th episode. She only won twice between 4th through 11th episodes. Hua won 4 times in comparison. Tengri, who joined in 7th, also did better than her couple times. Even she won at the end, the single performance with the most votes was’t one of hers. It went to Hua Chenyu. It wasn’t as one-sided as many may assume. Also, she strategized the most and treated this as a competition the most. Her range wasn’t as varied as others and her song choices were the most conservative. Hua Chenyu was the most chill, creative and explosive of them all and also the most care-free. For example, everyone didn’t want to be the first performer and he once volunteered to exchange the order with KZ when KZ drew the first. He also performed Fake Monk, the most unique and bold performance ever shown on a show of this scale. To me, his creativity and well-roundedness put him as the overall winner. Most other contestants also challenged themselves more to try something different.

Well I'm glad you mentioned he will join later because i actually watched this to see him and was wondering where he was... I do not understand this shows purpose at all and actually wonder what Jessie J is even doing there, when they showed her i thought she was one of the judges or something. It feels like a publicity stunt and not a very good one, I didn't think her performance was flawless at all, though none of the performances truly moved me, too many antics not enough heartfelt singing. The beginning of Tien Chong sounded promising until it quickly took a nose dive. Well I'll keep watching to see Hua Chen Yu. Additionally I just saw that 霍尊 was also on the show very much looking forward to ses him too, he sings one of my favourite songs.

Omg that Angela Chang was so weirdly good. As someone who never listened to chinese music, it was a really weird sound but incredibly captivating! I wonder if that kind of singing is specific to her or is that some kind of 'pop' chinese?

If you're talking about her style then that type of sound is, at least I think it to be, unique to Chinese music - the combination of traditional Chinese sounds but modernised. Duan Aojuan from another Chinese show (and the group Rocket Girls) also has a captivating voice. There's also S.I.N.G. a Chinese Girl Group who really focus on that aspect of Mando-Pop. Other artists like Jackson Wang use mainly 'Western' sounds. It mostly depends on the artist but either way Chinese Pop is quite diverse so it's worthy of exploration if you like the sound!
