Meet the people dedicated to preserving disappearing parts of our daily lives.
In Taebaek, the last remaining briquette factory, Korea’s final domestic shovel handle factory, and the only artisan making handcrafted abacuses stand resilient.
At the heart of this story is Mr. Yoo Byung-tae, who has kept his shovel handle factory running for 17 years, the last of its kind in Korea after cheaper Chinese imports flooded the market. Made exclusively from oak, his shovel handles can withstand the weight of a 2.5-ton forklift without breaking, thanks to a meticulous 20-step manufacturing process.
Eight years ago, his son, Yoo Heung-jo, left his trading job to join his father in protecting this piece of Korean craftsmanship. Thanks to his modern marketing efforts, the once-struggling factory has found new life.
Discover the unwavering bond between father and son, working side by side like a shovel and its handle.
