FYI: Liao Dynasty is a foreign kingdom in northern china. To the south is Song Dynasty. The Khitans (proto-mongols) were actually enemies in Han Chinese history. The drama is based on the true story of Empress Xiao.

Khitans are not proto-mongols, but one of the earlier nomads dominated the grassland. Khitan, Jurchen, Tangut and Mongol all overlapped with Song Dynasty and have very interesting relationships. As time passed by, first Jurchen overtook Khitan, then Mongol overtook Jurchen and Tangut, lastly Mongol overtook Song and founded the Yuan dynasty as part of the greater Mongol empire.

This drama is based on the history of Khitan people and their Liao dynasty, which contributed to the Chinese civilization greatly. Khitan were not Mongols at the time of Liao dynasty. Khitan formed Liao dynasty, but later was defeated by Jurchen(ancestors of Manchus), then driven out of their ancestral land, moved west and south. later Mongols delivered a final blow to Khitan’s power, and they disintegrated. some of them were assimilated into the Mongols, possible also into other ethnicities in the east and Central Asia. Their descendants that still maintain some of the language and culture practices are the Daur ( 达翰儿） people in China today. Also, all the way in Yunnan province today, there is a small cluster of people that could have khitan ancestors are found, and a stone carving with Khitan language were also found there. Khitan left behind some of the best ancient Buddhist art found in China today.

Drama is pretty good so far, but I guess I’m the only one that has an issue with the female lead. Others can disagree, but she made a mess in the first episode over the horse (she said she saved the main guy but didn’t she start the whole thing lol?) and now she enters into this archery competition forcefully and LITERALLY put not only herself but her whole family in danger. Actually rather than strong I find her reckless and a bit spoiled/selfish for doing these things. I will give her some more time though since I’ve really waited for this drama and really hope she will grow on me. I do like the sisters interactions and ofc Shawn Dou 😂💕

Girls are not built like that. We are sugar and then, the spice is added as a bonus. What her character reflects is the sole reason why God made women as a gift and not a present.
