2nd time i adored so much of chinese actor aside from Jeffy Yan, superb, i loved his acting chin ni, as Filipino you make me remind of the past of chinese culture… i fell in love with you, even if going to watch this over and over again… full of emotions… for me he is one of the phenomenal actor in Chinese History!!!

The dynamics of power and emotion in leadership are complex and multifaceted. The old emperor's wisdom may be clouded by his inability to discern Ning Yi's true intentions, contrasting with the more overt ambitions of his other sons. Meanwhile, He Lian Zheng's decision to relinquish his feelings for Feng Zhi Wei in favour of her happiness with Ning Yi is a poignant example of selfless love and nobility, traits that are admirable in any man or ruler, seasoned or new. These intricate relationships highlight the delicate balance between personal desires and the greater good in governance.

For his mother, Ning Yi is willing to give up everything he is and has and even live in exile. Why not for his beloved woman? What I recognize from Chen Kun's acting: NY regresses to the 8yo child when it comes to his mother. The gestures, words, his lament and crying, all in a childlike expression. This relationship could never mature and remained as a traumatic hole in him. For the 8yo boy, mother is the most important person. For the adult man, this should rather be his life partner. But he rejects FZW, he gives up, breaking his promise to never give up her…. I can't shake the impression that the mother being alive is the factor that makes him "tip over" like that. Indeed he would almost have aborted his rescue mission to run straight to his mother.

I assume you are not Chinese ;). In Chinese culture, the mother is and remains the most important woman in a man's life even after he has married. As a Chinese man, you would generally be expected to give preference to your mother over your wife. That's the bedrock of Confucian morals.

@@sebastiankirsch2295 I'm not Chinese, but like you apparently, German. :) Well, Confucian... For one, so much about ROTP doesn't look Confucian at all, e.g. very independent acting of some female characters. Or Ning Yi accepting & appreciating Zhiwei's political talents and never demanding she fulfill her female role. My impression is Buddhist teachings play the dominant role in the drama, alongside archaic feuding rules. But I must admit I did the character an injustice: Ning Yi IS willing to leave everything for his woman. The problem is, she breaks with him shortly afterwards. In fact, he never gives up on Zhiwei, not until the very end. But at this point he’s very much in doubt as to whether they are right for each other. The mother herself seems to me to be more of an archetype. Smiling, giving food and comfort, as if to a small child. It could as well be her spirit appearing to Ning Yi. Anyway, the mother episode feels like an interlude in the story. It has no deeper consequences for the characters and plot.

@@stellasonabilis9884 fair point about the influence of Buddhism. That certainly plays a role. The whole family structure and the behavioral norms, how the sons relate and pay respect to their parents, especially the emperor, are quintessentially Confucian, though. The political feuds where everyone is cunningly manipulating each other and (with the exception of the lead characters) is ruthlessly maximizing their own interest, to me, seem to be primarily rooted in legalism. Despite of the cultural revolution, Confucian morals are still a powerful undercurrent in Chinese society today. So I would assume that the makers of the drama were also influenced by it. Anyway, it is pure fiction, so everyone is entitled to interpret into it whatever they want ;).

@@sebastiankirsch2295 Yep it’s fiction, and fiction has its own customs. Something like the female role reversal (masquerading as a man), which seems to be an ancient literary motif in China. The original novel is full of fantasy/wuxia elements and the characters appear more fairytale-like, albeit with psychological-modern traits. Ning Yi in the novel grieves a lot for his (really long dead) mother, but that becomes the momentum that really brings him & Zhiwei together. And he does downright insane things for the sake of his girl, while she is a sword-bearing heroine who at times seems quite self-centered. Female author and her dreams... ;-) The drama changed to a more realistic, pseudo-historical level (including some strange "state moral" motifs) and almost eliminated the fantasy elements. If this were done consistently, the romance between the two would not be possible. So the screenwriters had to be arbitrary, sometimes opening up possibilities for their leads, sometimes claiming things impossible. At times it frustrates me as a viewer, esp as they jettison core motifs like the notorious oath, initially considered super sacred & unbreakable. What they wanted with this statuesque mother character is really beyond me. But my eyes tell me Chen Kun actually plays these scenes with a "child's soul". Comparing the relationship of the 2nd or 7th Prince to their respective mothers, the difference is clear.

Alright, I have suspected all along the emperor probably didn't kill Ning Yi's mother (why kept Ning Yi's wet nurse alive if his mother was dead) but hid her away for all these years was really cruel. He's losing his sons one by one. He doesn't even know his only daughter was killed by one of his son. What a fool! In the end he'll probably be killed by Ning Qi and that's what he deserves. Apple doesn't fall far from the tree, right?

One of the better episodes in a while. I think the problem with this show is that Zhiwei's Harem and Ning Yi and Pops Struggle to Say Wo Xi Huan Ni work well as separate dramas. The writers can't seem to make them work together. Hence the drama works best when Zhiwei and Yi are apart or, at most, peripheral actors in each other's drama. That might sound blasphemous if you just wanna see cooties spreading, but I said what I said.

i had always thought the emperor was fairly good til recently. now i think he is addicted to drugs and it messed his brain up. he can't see what is front of him the truth. he worries about the dynasty but he is ruining it by giving to that vindictive son. if he knew that son killed his daughter how would he feel then? and i feel so bad for FZ. she has stayed with the prince through everything and he keeps shunning her. i think now she will never go back to him. i can never understand if you love someone truly how a person can be that cruel to them. this is a good drama.

FZW once broke up with him for the sake of her dead mother, that was the first step to self-destruction. NY didn't give up, that's why the relationship somehow survived. Hua Qiong appealed to Zhiwei to "live her truth"... she didn't dare. Now she would be ready. And now it's Ning Yi who gives up and rejects her... and no longer dares to live his truth. It's painful to watch the self-destruction of the two characters. They darken step by step.

@@tasneemnashaat2503 Flirting while she's on her way to marry another man? Ning Yi had proposed to her and dreamed of having children with her... Zhiwei's "emotional take" and breakup separates the two, not the emperor's order. Btw, it's Zhiwei who suggested this solution to the Emperor. Ning Yi would very likely have been willing to go somewhere in the provinces with her, even giving up his status if necessary. In Minhai, she wooed, encouraged, provoked, subtly caressed him until he „surrendered“. So her laconic drop-off shortly afterwards was doubly cruel.

Yes, it is absurd. No recognizable motivation. Except perhaps that his mother being alive confuses him so much that he regresses to the 8yo child from back then. A lover has no place in the childish world... But Zhiwei has always been the source of his strength and optimism. She transformed him from a gloomy, disturbed person into something better. She has made "the brightness of his soul" shine. He should know that. Giving up FZW means the death of his soul. No mother can replace this for him. Why, why, why?

This drama is so over dramatic! I don't understand you guys, why you want to see so much pain still in movies or series and you are still happy about it, there is enough pain in real world, I want to see happy story.🙏🏼❤️ So annoying! In this drama, looks like everybody will kill each other! 👻 I prefer much relax drama like New life begins, The sword and the brocade, Legend of Fei, Story of Ming Lan, Rebirth for you, Royal Rumors, etc. much better than this. Way too long, probably becouse thay need to kill all the characters in this. 🤷🏼‍♂️

This drama is bad, but not because it's tragic. It's just poorly plotted and written in parts. Not everyone can stomach overly saccharine dramas where the extent of the plot is the FL stumbling into the ML's arms in slow motion.
