The Citadel of Hue was the imperial capital of Vietnam during the Nguyen Dynasty (the last royal dynasty) for 140 years until the abdication of King Bao Dai in 1945. After ascending the throne, King Gia Long conducted a survey in 1803 to choose a location for a new citadel. He finally chose a large land on the north bank of the Perfume River as the place to build the citadel. The construction was started in 1805 and completed in 1832 under the reign of King Minh Mang.
The Citadel of Hue has 3 great walls. The outermost wall surrounds the whole citadel with an area of ​​about 5.2 square kilometers. It has a perimeter of about 10 km, a height of 6.6 m and a thickness of about 21 m. The outside is surrounded by a moat to provide it with a preliminary line of defense and traffic.
The second wall encloses the Imperial City, which is nearly square with a perimeter of about 2,500 m. It contains the palaces that housed the imperial family, as well as shrines, gardens, and residences for mandarins.
The innermost wall surrounds the Forbidden City, which has a perimeter of about 1,200 m. This is considered the core of the citadel, the place where the king and his family lived and worked every day, and was strictly protected.
The Imperial City was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. It has been undergoing restoration.
