As a fan of Xiao Zhan, I was initially sceptical when he accepted the role of Guo Jing because Felix Wong (Huang Rihua)'s portrayal made him so stupid and dumb that I ended up cheering for Yang Kang instead. However, after watching Xiao Zhan's and Tsui Hark's interviews, I am more assured to watch this movie. Xiao Zhan is such an immersive actor that he really walks in the shoes of the characters he portrays. Like he says, the horse riding, martial arts and learning a new language are peripheral. The core is bringing out the true essence of Guo Jing's beliefs, principles and moral compass to the audience. This is where Xiao Zhan is clearly aligned and credit goes to Tsui Hark for spotting this gem and polishing it into a diamond.
