This is a teaching demonstration from veteran elementary school teacher and 2013 Riverside County Teacher of the Year, Tim Bedley. This lesson aimed to model some high engagement and classroom management techniques for a newer teacher. This is Mr. Bedley's first contact with these students.

This man is amazing! He is definitely the type of Teacher I want to become in the future! His strategies are helpful and I will likely interpret them in my classes in the future. #GreatEducators

Great ideas for managing the class; impressive. However he went 20 minutes into the 50/55-minute period before beginning the lesson. That being said, the techniques could work really well once students assimilate them into the normal class routine.

As I've mentioned, this video shows how to establish routines with students. I had zero experience with this group of students prior to this lesson. The teacher was struggling with classroom control and wanted some ideas on how to gain control of some very challenging kids.

Hello Mr. Bedley. My name is Jose Gomez. I am a teacher candidate currently enrolled at the A-STEP Alternative Teacher Certification Program at Brownsville, Texas. I saw your video and learned from it. Would you mind telling me the name of this school and the grade level of these students so I can use it for observation hours? Thank you!

Thanks Jose. It's 8th grade, but I don't remember the school name. Sorry about that.

There's a lot of participation in this, but what is the actual content? I'm having anxiety just trying to keep up with all of the instructions he's giving them and yet nothing is being taught.

The purpose of this video is not to help teachers with content. It is to show how to establish clear expectations and follow through on those expectations. I would love to see an example of you teaching. ;)

It was about 5 minutes worth of actual content, at barely a 5th grade level. But for 8th graders, and spread out over 45 minutes.

Try volunteering and see how it goes. Not everyone is cut out to teach, but most people I believe can learn the skills to become a good teacher. Classroom management is the hardest part. Most people view teaching as lecturing, which is a very small part of the job...or at least it should be. Hope that helps.

The first ten minutes is spent using points to get students to conform. I saw students talking to each other and I can only assume they were on task. I would love to have seen the teacher actually engage student groups about what they were thinking. Too much emphasis is placed on earning points and extra credit points. A lot of class time is waisted.

Of course, it would be poor teaching to spend this kind of time establishing routines and setting standards once the teacher has been working with the group of kids for a considerable amount of time. However, this was the first time these students had ever seen me. Time spent on such procedures is definitely not a "waist."
