When I’ve played a Schmidt I always thought that it was really east to play, but with a thinner, brighter tone

Very fine playing Dr. Wright!! You are the second person I've heard say that the Schmid horn valves are very fast and accurate or notchy. Thank you so much for your presentation.

I hate to say it but, for me, it seemed like an occasional note would be out of tune as I was listening. I don't think this was you getting used to the new instrument. You sounded completely solid on all the notes but then one would stand out as being out of tune. Perhaps this was the different tuning you mentioned but it certainly came across as a concern. I know Schmid Horns are considered great horns but this video gives me pause. I'm not in the market for a new horn (my Lawson will probably be the instrument I play the rest of my life) but it's interesting to hear reviews of other Horns like this. Thanks for providing us all with this information. Wonderful playing as well.

I always thought that finke horns have the shortest throw for the valve keys.

That's because Finke horns use light plastic rotors, while the Schmid rotors, while being brass, have a smaller diameter. By having smaller rotors, in addition of being lighter, the separation between the two sides of the rotor is also reduced, thereby minimizing the obstruction of the air flow while switching the valve position.
