Never worry about making mistakes. The only person who never made a mistake never did anything! Great job. 👍

Hi Beth . I worked in a crash repair centre and one of our best painters forgot to put the hardner in the laquer . He couldn't understand why it was still soft after he'd baked it , and then he slowly reallised his mistake . He had to wash off all the laquer and base coat and start again !!!! You obviously put the hardner in the laquer as well , so no harm done ! And l now recall our most skilled painter , who thought he knew it all , used the basecoat /clear system but didn't realise you had to laquer the basecooat to protect it . He spent hours and hours trying to buff it to a shine ........the only tip l could give you is wear spray overalls so you don't get laquer in your hair ! Well done you !

I think you've done a great job on it Beth. I feel your pain with the rubbing down lol, knocking back orange peel is a bit labourious but once it's polished up it's really satisfying. Keep up the good work! 👍

For someone who says they’re not a painter, that engine bay looks pretty neat to me.

You did a fantastic job Beth! I’ve done a couple of dozen myself and your work is really amazing. I cleaned and painted everything I could get to on my 78 Chevy K5 Blazer and a stinking power steering hose starting leaking and man I’ve got a mess now. My wife calls me Mr. Mistake.

Some beautiful copper brake line work there, that's really smart! As for mistakes with paint etc., you're doing a lot better than I did with my brief foray into painting the big bumpers for my previously-small-bumper mk2. I used an electric sander with too coarse paper and actually ended up melting the plastic bumper, which came away in little bobbles like an old sweater. The only route back was something like 15 coats of Pasadena blue paint and 70-odd years of my life to build it back up again. Looks awesome now though, as I'm sure yours will too!

If you'd used thinner with the hardner for the top coat paint, it'd have come out fine. all a learning curve. Get a measuring stick and do 2:1 ratio 2 parts paint, 1 part hardner to 1 part thinners (maybe 1.5 thinners)

Good job!!! Usually when you put hardener in basecoat, it does assist in making it tougher and stop stonechips etc. I usually only put say 5% in.

Tip 2 have a look for an air 90 degree air sander 1/4 inch that has a velcro backing pad, they do 2" or 3" pads and do up to 3000 wet and dry. Makes life so much easier

It doesn't matter how many mistakes we make in life as long as we learn by them, and there is nothing more satisfying than when it all goes well to say I did that. Well done Beth great job cheers for now Nigel.

I've never tried to mend a car whilst wearing the Haynes manual on my head! But, then again, I've never come close to doing the scope and quality of work that you are putting in on the Golf. It's a tremendous job you are doing!

More great footage! What brand of wings did you use? The ones I got were such a bad fit that I ended up just cutting out what I needed. Sounded like you went from wet sanding to 2000 grit, but maybe I misheard! I’m no expert (the mk2 I’ve just about finished, is just the second full respray I’ve done,) but my friend who owns a Bodyshop advised me to use 1500 discs on DA after wet sanding. I usually do 1500 wet, then 1500, 2000, 2500, and 3000 on DA, as it makes light work of polishing.

Watching you with your dad brings back so many memories for me when I was a young apprentice mechanic. I used to work with an older guy who was a very difficult person and shouted a lot. Not that your Dad is anything like that, indeed he seems a lovely guy and gives you all the encouragement that you need and deserve. Because I worked with that guy, it dented my confidence and , well it just wasnt a pleasant working enviroment. Aaaanyway..........enoough of that rubbish - what you are doing here is brilliant. And, as someone else said earlier, never ever worry about making mistakes - that is how one learns, trust me I have made so many in the past. The project is coming on really well - very impressed. I cant wait for the initial fire up of the engine - just wish I could be there to share your excitement, listening for any strange noises and breathing in all those wonderful smells you get when a freshly built engine starts to warm up. You will be posting that as a video , wont you ?
