It’s been so many years since I’ve done that on that engine but I’m not mistaken the polls have a slight taper outward past the thread that brings the gear moda center. The gear spins true and it doesn’t wobble or move back one way or the other or bind anywhere that’s it

I have a 454 in a motor home built on a 1984 Chev P30 chassis with 80K miles on it. I'm a electronics tech with a little self-taught knowledge of automotive repair. I've been told that the mid 80s was the era of nylon timing gears and cheap chain in the 454. True? (I've seen a set of nylon gears that are stripped, and supposedly the 454 had 65K on it when the gears died). I was also told that I could do a lot worse than replace the nylon gears with steel and swap the chain for a gear drive. True? I'm not interested in fake turbine whine, just good solid quiet performance and not having to touch the timing chain or gears again. So what brand of gears do you recommend, and should I go with a chain or a gear set? And what brand on the chain or gears? I've heard that Milodon is one of the best.

@@ZaksMuscleMotors will it cause any wierd vibrations. I have a stock 305 that I'm going to be rehashing and I'm thinking of going timing gears. Instead off the chain.
@ZaksMuscleMotors
@ZaksMuscleMotors 3 жыл бұрын
Well that’s hard to answer one way. If your engine is healthy and runs good and balanced decently sure go with a gear drive. But as far as a stock 305 it’s not gonna really add a benefit for you besides maybe a whining sound. For the added cost and no real gain I would use a stock double roller chain.

I've been a mechanic myself for 35 years, but recently had someone ask why most timing gear sets use 2 diffent size idler gears and I wasn't 100% sure. I believe it has to do with wear pattern, having the smaller follower allowing it to ride on different and or fewer teeth, but thats really just a guess, anyone know for sure either way?

Anyone know if Gear Drives work with EFI systems? I thought I had heard they might cause an issue? Something possibly to do with the vibration from the gear drive system and vibration? Thanks all! I wanna do a engine with a Gear Drive and efi as well as with a factory Hydraulic cam. I have a corvette cam from a 1969 to a 1971 corvette I wanna say brand new. I wanna use and my dad used on a 1972 Corvette 350 with everything stock on the motor and it smoked the tires like no body's business with side pipes. My dad built the motor for a dealership's owner and you could hear that thing over 4 blocks away just running.

Good basic info. However, one should ALWAYS drill a1/16th hole in the lifter galley plugs to supply oil to the gear set.(on a Chevy small or big block. Can't opine on other brands, because I'm a Chevy guy) This is extremely important. Otherwise. The gear set will wear too quickly and introduce metal shavings into the oil. Not cool! Plus is always a good idea to use a high volume oil pump to offset any loss of pressure from aforementioned galley plug holes.

Hey Zak Lamb..... I have this set up in my 85 Monte SS here in the UK.. needless to say Monte Carlo's are pretty rare here, never seen another at shows or for sale, so total lack of support.. anyhow you mention vibration being transfered to the block... how can I reduce this? is there anything I can buy? I don't know? maybe a Harmonic Balancer? sadly I don't know the 305 at all but I know mine engine has a few upgrades.. headers, H pipe, HEI diz, Holley carb, pro-flo air cleaner, 600hp rated prop, elec fan, but I want more power maybe 300hp but want to address this vibration thing you speak of...... I'm about to install Lunati cam kit, double valve springs etc.. grateful if you could take a lil time out on me.. regards
@ZaksMuscleMotors
@ZaksMuscleMotors 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Shane, thanks for your question!!!! When an engine is rotating, the mass is moving in a couple different directions, reciprocating and centrifugal. The vibration comes from a rotating assembly not being completely balanced. You have a couple options, but first let me say, with your 305 you won't have an issue really unless your turning some high rpms or your assembly is way out of whack. You'll be fine the way it it. When you start making more horsepower450-500 and up and turning 6,500 rpm or more you really want to consider taking out the rotating assemble and have it balanced. Also, a fluid damper ( harmonic balanced ) can really help cut down on vibration. I'll make a video to explain more for you in a day or two and post it. Hope this helps. Any other questions please feel free to ask!!!

Dear friend . PLEASE Do yourself a favor Throw your Gear Drive away ..and purchase a Good high quality Cloyes Timing chain & set . If your really thinking about performance up grades get an after market set of small CC Aluminum Cylinder heads and depending on which motor you have try the Comp Cams 268H if it's flat tappet . and use a nice high stall speed T.C.like in the 1000 over stock range remember the stock heads are whats keeping you from making any meaningful performance improvements THEY SUCK...but there are any number of great balancers out there for that motor made by ATI.TCI ..just make sure it's NOT been dropped if your buying used look it over real well ...good luck..

Rick Ashe if you're ever unsure after it's put together, take he number 1 spark plug out, have someone bump the starter with your thumb over the spark plug hole, when you feel the pressure you're on he compression stroke. Have them stop, and move your timing mark to 0 on your harmonic balancer. That will get you at TDC on the compression stroke to fire your number 1 cylinder in time.

Since when? Henry yunick always used gear drives in all his builds and he'd never ever broken a gear drive set and I've never heard of anyone breaking a gear drive. Ynless you're using phenolic/plastic gears. But if you're using iron or steel (not aluminum) they are virtually indestructible. Hell, I have a phenolic gear drive set on an old 4 banger toyota thats been rebuilt 4 times, this is its 5th rebuild and the original iron/phenolic gear drive looks like the day it was made 50 years ago. Metal gears are indestructible.

@@smh9902 He's probably talking about them good ole budget sets for $30 lol they do break a lot. Usually not the actual gears but all the other small cheap shit they use to make them so cheap! Spend $100-$150 and it'll out live your children lol

I know this is an old video, but I'd NEVER run a dual idler style gear drive on anything, especially an off brand like used here. If you want to run a gear drive, a fixed idler, full cover design is what you want to run....not even in the same class...

A Fixed Idler Gear Drive system (Like Milodon )is far better and superior then a floater Gear Drive system like you have shown here when you're going Gear Drive !

+ricecarkiller your opinion. I've used them for YEARS in high performance applications and never had an issue. That's a FACT. No need to come on here and troll the comments your wasting your time. You need to look for correct lash and clearance with the timing cover. I really don't care what you think lol. Don't like em, move on!

Not Trolling comments here nor did I comment on the only one comment that was made here did I "now" ! I made A NEW ("MY OWN") comment in response to YOUR VIDEO ! The comment and watching YOUR VIDEO was not a waste of my time here !You sound just like them crybaby Liberals who call people names and destroy things when others disagree with them and are told the truth !A true reputable engine builder will not use floater gear drives in a race engine and tell you their sloppy and not precise . I'm not here to bust your balls lol . I'm a rear head ,motor head ,etc. like you... just relax have a beer and keep building Zak .

+ricecarkiller lol far from a liberal. You are posting your opinion not facts. For junk they sure do sell a lot of them and never had issues with any that I have used. I don't care if it's a new comment or not your just creating a pot of crap to stir, a true gear head wouldn't sit here and stir shit up on another's page. I will keep building and using a floater cause they work. You can have all your opinions in the world and that's fine but when facts outweigh your opinion you don't have an argument and I don't have time for mindless opinions. Sorry to be so harsh with you but this is the kind of stuff that gets under my skin. Again is you don't agree that's fine, comment if you like, but don't be shocked when someone calls you on your bs. Have a good evening, like, share, and subscribe!

Henry Yunick always used gears in his builds. Realistically, why not use gears? They won't break. Ever. Period. Just stay away from plastic/phenolic gears. Iron gears will never, ever ever break. They never stretch. There's no disadvantage.

@@johngrepo9976 No, I drive a 1966 F350 with iron timing gears in the 300i6, I love the gear whine, and I love the reliability even more. The louder and more obnoxious an engine is, the better. I even cut off the factory muffler and put on a glass pack for efficiency. The cab has no sound insulation, and its been my daily for 5 years. I'm not like most people.

Your seriously taking advice from a guy wearing sweatpants or shorts. Dog bone gear drives are garbage. Double roller timing sets are great for replacement or mild to medium street performance engines. Belt drive systems reduce harmonics from the crankshaft to the valve train as well as reduce friction. Single idler gear drives are used for high performance applications where you are driving pumps and such off your camshaft. Educate yourselves people.
