I’m impressed by the cleanliness of the panel. However, most notable is the safety and functionality of the new instrument. You’re transforming your aircraft into a mini airliner! Respecting the cost associated with such upgrades, I’m honestly jealous.

Thanks, Robert. In-flight fire? That must have been a scary experience! Were you able to land immediately? Did it self-extinguish, or was it still burning when you landed? (I don't even want to think about it too much...) Regards, Martin

Thanks Martin. It was quiet the show stopper! I was descending from 5K feet to land in about 8 minutes. It actually extinguished itself after tripping the breaker. But it was very smokey in the cabin. I didn't declare an emergency because I was in class G airspace in the middle of NE and could have put it down really in any field below me. Good VFR conditions. But I wish I had bought the EDM and not the Auracle. It was not the glory unit it was represented to be. But I love my 930 and you will love yours also! I very much recommend the Garmin AP should you need a new unit anytime soon. Incredible accuracy. Take care, Robert

@@martinpauly I just looked at JPI's install instructions, suspending the Fuel flow transducer even or below the fuel servo inlet port is acceptable, like yours. Optionally, up top, like mine , they advise a loop, or bump in the line from the transducer output down to the fuel servo. I'd say if it worked there with your 800, it'll work there with your 930.

Martin when I visited the JPI booth at Oshkosh, they said they the EGT and CHT probes from 7/800 series could be reused, but I’d have to give them a call to create a custom “kit” for an upgrade to a 900. UL was this your experience as well?
@martinpauly5 жыл бұрын
I got a different answer for this primary installation (at least I thought I did - maybe I misinterpreted it?). Interesting bit of kit. Couple questions: What kind of failures does the redundant display at the top protect you from? Is it driven from a different power supply / MCU / sensors, or is it only to protect against the main LCD failing? Do you worry about accumulated errors while entering the fuel added from eventually making the fuel gauge completely wrong? Is there some other sanity check involved?
@martinpauly5 жыл бұрын
Jonathan, regarding your first question, my understanding is the little redundant display (top left) protects only from a failure of the main LCD and its graphics generation, not the sensors or computation. So it's not intended to be a completely redundant system. Regarding the fuel and cumulative errors: the computed fuel indication should be set prior to each flight to match what's in the tanks. In the Bonanza, I have tabs in each tank to precisely indicate full, full-5, and full-10 gallons. So when I fill up both tanks, I can precisely see anywhere from 20 gallons below full to full, in five gallon increments. That's good enough to set the computed fuel value before flight. Also, the instrument has traditional fuel indicators using floating sensors in the tanks. So I think I'm well covered. Best regards, Martin

The RAD or Remote Access Display as it's called, is a FAA mandated requirement, and it is supposed to put Manifold Pressure and RPM directly in front of the pilot, as well as other alarms. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnXHpKJpp5uSfLM I believe that it is supposed to be on top of the 'six pack', or at least be within view when you're looking at the six pack. From page 10 of the installation manual. "The RAD PN-790749 mounts in a 5/8 inch hole in the panel directly in front of the pilot for the EDM-930 . . ." So, it should be directly in front of the pilot. I see it's mounted up and to the left of the display, and according to this document, it's actually in the wrong place. Most times I've seen it installed anywhere else is usually over the artificial horizon or the altimeter. Page 7-10 of this document will help explain it. www.jpinstruments.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Install908-Primary_REV-K-4-18-2017jfp.pdf

Well, now that Dynon has an AML for over 600 airplanes, not including the autopilot, maybe it's time to install a Skyview HDX system. Since you already have the JPI and a Lynx ADS-B transponder, you won't need those. You won't need another Com radio either. So, the display, GPS, tray, cables, backup displays, etc., yo.u come in at a little over $13,100, and then installation costs. I'd be willing to bet you could get a nice glass cockpit for under $20,000, but with no autopilot. I don't know what you have now, but if you have something like a King KFC-150, those still work well. Either that, or spend the money and upgrade to a newer S-Tec or newer Century AFCS. Money well spent for an all glass cockpit. Yeah, I know, money doesn't grow on trees, but right now, for a certified airplane, I think a 10" Skyview HDX is the least expensive way you can go.
@martinpauly5 жыл бұрын
Dynon is in fact a system I have looked at, as is the Aspen. If I go the Dynon route, I would certainly want to take their autopilot as well (to be certified sometime this year for my A36, as I understood in Oshkosh). I have a Century III - not bad, but it is aging, so if in the process of putting an EFIS into the panel I can also make the move to a modern, digital autopilot, that makes a lot of sense to me. Regards, Martin
@GaryMCurran5 жыл бұрын
@@martinpauly it's your airplane and your money, and like so many people I live vicariously through videos like this. However, I truly think that is probably the best route to go. With certification expected later on this year, even with the autopilot, it still won't be much more than what I said. IF I was still an active pilot, and looking for an airplane, a F33A would be on my short list. Pricing for a twin display system for the V35 family is around the mid $40K mark, but that's displays, transponder, autopilot, engine monitor, and the whole package. Personally, I don't think that's a bad price installed, and I would expect it to be the same for the F33A. Add a couple of Avidyne IFD 550s and you're set.
