I made a video also on Brent Byer's solid flex drive. I've recently noticed that every six runs I have to replace engine bearings. I'm making an educated guess that the bearings are taking on the thrust load since the flex cable is no longer taking the load. Performance is by far excellent but increases maintenance.

Interesting. That has not been my experience, having never changed a bearing in any of my Nova Rossi's until finally one that got rough earlier this year. Time to review your after-run program maybe?

Scott, because of your videos, I just ordered a 1/10th model 172 kit from ML Boatworks. I’m a long time RC car guy, and a woodworker so building my own kit interests me. Any advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Probably never race it but I want to build it race worthy just in case. BTW interesting fact, I live 2 blocks from Gougeon Brothers the guys who make west systems epoxies

Hey as a stupid tip, using the neck of a .50 caliber cartridge will allow you to change pipe size and length for more torque on some size gas engines

What diameter props do you run on your boat? Love your videos keep up the good work

My current favorite is an ABC 2315-19-38 that I rework myself. In the ABC numbering system the first two numbers are the diameter in inches, in this case 2.3" or 58.42mm

I'm noticing in their pictures that they've slotted one end presumably to have it slip fit over the end of the pipe. This is workable, but if you'd rather attach it with silicone and zip ties as I've done, you might want to contact them to see if they will build it without slotting the end

Scott, is there any reason other than fitment under the cowel that I shouldn't get the motor mounted as far forward as possible?

Too much weight in the front will pound the nose, but ya, it's hard to get to the point of too much weight. I shoot for having the glow plug or spark plug in line with the sponson transoms. Lately though I've been thinking that a little bit forward from there might be better yet.

Thanks for the info! I have another question regarding the ride pads "off" angle. I'm not sure if both ride pads are sloping in the same direction or if the slope is a "toe- in" style i.e. sloping towards each other.

Scott, lovin' the videos. Considering buying an MLB 1/8 172 kit to be built as U-12 Graham Trucking. Getting my feet wet with an Aquacraft nitro Miss Vegas in the mean time. Been flying/building large rc planes for a while. Some of the larger scale flyers, mostly jets are using gyros to help smooth out flights of these planes. After watching last 2 H1 full scale races and watching how canards work, do you think a gyro could be used to control a movable canard on an 1/8 or bigger scale hydroplane? Like you I can't keep well enough alone and this is one of my brainiac ideas. Thoughts? Also, how much does balance or center of gravity front to back on boat effect attitude in the water? Appreciate your help.

It has been tried, unsuccessfully. It simply cannot track the constant motion and bouncing of the boat, and cannot react quickly enough

Oddly enough I wondered if the rudder would work on the side too but being an absolute new guy to the sport, I wasn't sure if this would pass inspection. I've not seen anything that says one way or the other.
