Don't use WD 40.. I'm a Watchmaker, i do this dry, and then just Brush off the grinding dust.. no problems with scratches.. Also, Before starting, put a piece of sandpaper under your tool, to flatten it..

We used to do this with a leather button glued onto a dowel and ultra-fine lapping compound. Also, we used the slowest speed on the drill press.

I did mine by drawing a half inch grid on the part with a sharpy and used a five eighths cratex stick.Instant eighth inch overlap

Great tutorial thanks .. am planning on same for dash I am building. One question though … does the finish distort when the flat panel is curved slightly?

Great question. The cratex rod is pretty soft, so with enough pressure exerted downward on the rod it should absorb the slight curve just fine. Just support the curved panel as rigid as possible to eliminate any deflection.

In a pinch, couldn’t you clamp the abrasive rod in a pillar drill chuck without making the holder?

In a pinch, yes. Tho you run the risk of damaging part of the rod that’s clamped in the chuck. Just cut the rod down so you have as little stick out from the chuck as possible.

Try “Round abrasive rod”. Amazon definitely has a couple options.
