I work for a university associated with CERN (ATLAS experiment to be precise). We operate one of the HPC sites which crunch the LHC data from CERN in the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid. Of course we're connected via Géant network :-). And inside our cluster we use.. Mikrotik switches 🤩

I'm in the US, our research universities have Internet2 which is connected to this and indicated on the graph shown, even the term "second internet" is used which is basically what Internet2's name implies, happy to see Mikrotik gear used in this, love the Winbox GUI and the price point

Cool stuff. You'd never have Ubiquiti post something like this.

I would love to see the actual network in action moving a few TB of data across between machines. WOW! This is insane!

'mikrotik products being cheap' isn't even in the top 3 reasons why you should consider using them, i don't understand why mikrotik likes to emphasize it so much.

@@mikrotik 1. (big one) company ethics. this is a bit difficult to explain but i'll try. mikrotik seems like a company that doesn't subscribe to predatory tactics used by lot's of modern business, especially 'tech' if they grab you they will bleed you to death with accessories, options, licenses , subscriptions and who know what else. another thing do you remeber when some time ago microsoft released windows 10 patch that killed mechanical harddrives? (slowing them down horribly) extorting purchases from users because you had to either get new computer or install SSD (i replaced a lot of drives in my office because of that) i can't imagine mikrotik doing something like that. that's why i'm putting this as #1 ethical behaviour is very rare these days and i think it's important to point out that mikrotik is a rare gem in that regard. 2. updates. (kind of extension of (1)) having to upgrade whole network just because manufacturer decided to stop releasing upgrades can be a big problem especially when it's a surprise. mikrotik never did it so far and i have devce next to me, rb450 with original firmware 2.29 now it's running 7.16.2 slowly but it does. and it was replaced when time came, not because i was forced. and mikrotik will give you 1001 real, good reasons to upgrade with constant improvements to firmware and new hardware. (you will be seduced into upgrading your hardware instead of being bullied) 3. running costs (low power draw, no stupid subscriptions) cost of device matters (especially for enthusiasts like me) but i think that in long run other things matter more (especially #1)

These Mikrotik switch great for home use, or light enterprise. However they fall short for AI/ML/NVMe-oF/RoCE/RDMA .. You need a real (Expensive) or used older switch to use this feature. So be sure to understand your workload before buying.
