2016 Mitsubishi Outlander S-AWC - Review & Offroad Performance

2016 Mitsubishi Outlander S-AWC - Off-Road Review. How does the Mitsubishi AWD system perform off road, in the snow, ice, mud, and gravel? The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander S-AWC shown features a 2.4L I4 gasoline engine producing 166 HP matched to a CVT transmission. Power can be sent to all four wheels through Mitsubishi's Super-All Wheel Control. The front has an active differential with an electronically activated clutch-type limited slip differential, there's an electronic center coupler to attach the rear axle, and the rear differential is open but takes advantage of clever braking for torque vectoring. Tested: Do the different AWD modes actually work?
Features include electronic power steering, automatic halogen headlights, fog lights, LED tail lights, 18 inch alloy wheels, one touch start/stop engine switch, hill start assist, and ABS with EBD and brake assist. This 2016 Outlander features the $5,250 SEL package adding navigation, collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, rain sensing wipers, remote power lift- gate, power glass sunroof, and a 710W Rockford Fosgate audio system with subwoofer.

Subaru Forester: Backing up on a small hill also in your video 1st Attempt: A little more gas and it doesnt wanna go up 2nd Attempt: A little bit faster and traction control giving up there 3rd Attempt: A little bit more speed...capable of holding but it doesnt give it power 4th Attempt: and a little bit faster and there we go. Best small/mid size suv based on youtube report, nice one subaru. Mitsubishi Outlander 1st Attempt: no sweat at all, walk in the park. Subaru fans watch this, very nice video.

@engineering explained. I bought my 2016 outlander brand new with great confidence thanks in large amount to this video and KZbin channel. I now have over 60k miles on it and have gone on numerous adventures on and off road. From drifting through the mountains near Santa Cruz, ca to climbing the snowy mountains at Pinecrest, big trees, and Lake Tahoe. Even driving up massive sand dunes in Death Valley. I’ve done many 500-600 mile trips in great comfort and once or twice a year even driving 6-7 hours to LA with 6 and 7 passengers. I’ve had 3 car seats and 5 adults all in at once. And 6 adults and 1 child all at once. The people in the 3rd row were a little cramped. But even with 7 people, a roof top carrier full of luggage, on a 6-7 hour ride to LA I manage to average 29mpg! Besides the amazing handling and off road capabilities, the best thing about this vehicle is the amazing gas mileage it “can” achieve. I was able to average 38.2mpg for over 300 miles driving through the desert going 60mph behind a giant RV. Although drafting obviously saves on fuel, the fact that it is even capable to achieve that kinda fuel economy on the highway in any condition for over 300 miles is amazing! Love this SUV! I've owned 2003 CRV (bought brand new), 2007 PILOT. We decided to finally trade the Pilot after a very problematic last 3 yrs (w everything but the engine falling apart at only 110k miles). We tested several mid size SUV and never planned or dreamed of ending up with a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander. Fast forward 11 months and 10k miles, and several deep Chicago snows and artic temps - this truck has proven its worth. Best bang for the buck. The one thing that sold us was the soft ride compared to the new CRV and RAV. Bought ours for $22k for a 4WD tax n title included.

I bought the Mitsubishi Outlander III MY2020 car 6 months ago, your review was very helpful and helped in making the right choice. They also fixed a lot of the things you mentioned. I have paddle shifters and manual mode, which allows me to use engine breaking. The lock mode does a great job offroad.

One thing to look out for is the Jatco cvt tranny.Those have been problematic for a lot of Nissan owners.Jatco supplies the cvt transmissions for Nissan,Mitsubishi and Susuki.Transmission experts recommend the fluid be changed every 40K miles or so.Cost is around $200 for the fluid change, labor and fluid.

I got a 2017 Outlander and I love it. I test drove a Subaru Forester and I was not that impressed with it's X-Drive plus it costs many thousands more. I owned Mitsubishi Monteros Diesel and they were amazing cars, great fuel economy, torque and just a blast when off roading...and I was able to fit 7 people in them plus all their luggage on the roof... I watched about 100 videos of people that called themselves car experts and it makes me wonder how they are given those titles... Maybe the are sponsored by competing manufacturers...lol...The Outlander is a great affordable vehicle that is fuel efficient, has 7 seats (2 small ones for kids),it and has S-AWC that will make Subaru nervous...lol...and best of all...they are very affordable...by the way...SOHC engines are easier and cheaper to fix...if the timing chain ever breaks little damage will occur to it...

I am still driving 2009 2.4 MIVEC Outlander with 155k on odo. I service my car as recommended and there is no issue with it except normal wear and tears. I live in Aus and occasional offroader. I went to sand duens with 4 person in it and it drove well. Last month went to Snowy mountain with lot of slops and did some mild offroading in bush, still no issue. I am not a expert on cars but boght this Outlander by watching KZbin videos and did some research on user reviews and i am thankful that i did so and happy with Mitsu Outlander. My next target is Pajero Sport.

I`m in Canada and I got one this August for my family daily life and occasional adventures on trails similar to the ones in this video. Here in Canada the models are different, I have the ES AWC Premium (highest equipment for the 4 cyl family) and that is exactly like this one, 4 cyl, white, leather etc etc except that here it comes with the AWC and not the SAWC and the infotainment is smaller. These come in the 6 cyl model only GT that is... We put about 7600KM (4700mi) in it to date and I am very satisfied with its overall value for money. Much more car for the money than a Rogue. Now we have snow tires on it as it is mandatory here after Dec 15. Yet it is a family crossover and not a truck, steering is light and artificial and power is ok on flat land, somehow weak in mountainous areas... The best of all, the Warranty is very generous... I wanted a Subaru Outback 2015 initially but could not get a good deal on it, here Subaru dealers are snob... I personally recommend it.

Yes it is more expensive and Subaru dealers will be harder to deal with than Mitsubishi dealers, but there's a reason why Subaru is selling like hotcakes while Mitsubishi is about to follow Suzuki's footsteps. Why? My father owned a 2000 Legacy and he had nothing but praises for it during the entire ownership of the car. Sadly around ~2010 or so with ~180k on the clock the dreaded EJ253 gaskets failed & given its mileage & cost to repair he sold it for a 2009 Outlander V6. Now we're in 2016 and both my mother & father complains constantly of the V6 thirst (despite being 3.0 liters it drinks more than my mother's 3.5 liter Mercedes!!!), instability on highway speeds which I can attest to, rattles developing & the car NVH is absolutely becoming worse every passing day. None of the issues the 10 year Subaru ever developed during ownership the 7 year Mitsubishi is happening. Needless to say I think I know which car is better built.

Thanks for share your experience! My last one was a 2005 JDM Outback, and I always liked also the shape of the 2007 Outlander + has 7 seater (ok, last 2 is for kids) but I like is bigger, and higher seating position. In New Zealand they have a really big warranty and probably better service than in Canada. I can understand than been bigger and higher there's more rolling and it won't be as "sporty" and funny to drive as Subaru, but thinking of something bigger, with that volume, is the Outlander still a good product, or def the quality is poor? I know 2009 model with the 2.4 is really thirsty so I can imagine how bad can be the 3.0. My previous Outback was the 2.5, never ever had a problem with my car, and was good on gas... just didn't like much the old school 4 speed auto that Subaru equipped in their models for many years, but I really like their engines, how the car handles, and the good quality in general, even when some people don't notice this, for me the quality you see it after some years...a Subaru with 10 years old, inside still in good conditions, with low level of noise (will depend how you treat it too) but in general, really good ones, and that's why always I have one. I can't afford now a brand new model, so will still have to think of a 10 year old model or 8 years old and sometimes I think could be good to try something different... but seems I should stay with Subaru. +Baltazar Campos Nieto The Outlander driving experience and handling is not as good as the Outback 2015 I test drove many many many times. I am still a big fan of the low gravity and well tuned electric steering of the Outback. It handles better and feels more sticky to the road. However in terms of value for money, the Outlander is a much better choice for a family that wants an overall descent crossover with a respectable AWD and of course the generous warranty. Built quality is OK. Material quality is a mixed bag. You hear micro rattles here and there but I took mine many times on rough roads this past fall... Here in Montreal, the Outback would have costed me much more than the Outlander so I am glad I got this one for my family. The only little thing I got lately, when temperature droped below 10celcius here, is that the rear suspensions made squeeks when passing over speed bumps. During my first oil change, they put some grease on them, they said they were dry... Oh well... By the way I have 10000Km in it already and I have it since August 2015.

Great review it's good to see Mitsubishi's AWD system can do, I'd expect nothingless from the manufacturer that won world rallies built the eclipse and evo. When I was in Japan I saw a hybrid electric version of this, would be interesting to see how that would do offroad and it's MPG.

Dealers are heavily discounting these Outlanders from what I've seen on cars.com.Some of the listed prices are $5500 and more off of msrp.If you find that kind of discount on the GT with the V6 and 6 speed auto tranny I think this is one hell of a poor mans well equipped SUV.I bought my wife a 2019 SEL fully equipped with 30K miles on it for $16100 last May.If it were a similarly equipped CRV or Rav4 the price would have easily been 6 grand higher.

On the hill just before 7 min, you couldn't see. This is where you engage the camera system to see how far your are from the edges and it gives you a front nose view so you can be sure to center the vehicle on top of the plateau.

I own it and love it but it has flaws. The CVT is a no-no w/out paddle shifters. Also its response time is pretty horrible. Worst thing is it has under dimensioned brakes so they wear off after 10k. Now Im trying some aftermarket to extend their life.

Great review. Please do an Audi Q5 and will not get over that hill. I have the 2016 Outlander (Diesel, with pedal shifters) and it is great, the S-AWC system is awesome (we have a country house in the Austrian mountains). It's roomy, silent and comfortable, too. The only negative after 6500 kilometers: The paint is super cheap, I got lots of paint chips on the hood already.

My mother's in the market for a new smaller SUV, and a lot of the terrain you showed here pretty much sums up winter where she lives, so I'll be forwarding this video along for consideration! It's a shame that 2.4L I4 is so down on power, but at the same time, that may be a benefit in snow and loose terrain. Did you have an opportunity to drive the V6 model as well?

+rhkips I haven't driven the V6, and will not be testing it. If you want power and are willing to sacrifice weight and fuel economy, that's the way to do it. The I4 was fine in my opinion, just not thrilling.

+Engineering Explained Some "off road" vehicles don't have proper supported frames and will bend when in these extreme conditions. So much so that the doors will have issues opening and closing. The fact that you didn't notice anything means this car is (as far as the frame is concerned) built well. This is something that Range Rover advertises a lot about their cars.

i also had an issue with the lack of engine braking this car offered. i never seen a car go so far on throttle lift off. it would literally just roll for a mile at highway speeds when you life off. this was ok in dry highway conditions but snowy hilly roads it was frightening. as explained in the video even the low gear mode did not offer enough braking. it was one reason why i only kept mine for only a few months and sold it..

Jason, I don´t understand one general thing: Why is it beneficial, when the rear wheels are decoupled from front wheels, why should this be more fuel efficient? Aren´t all the rear shafts and rear differential rotated from the rear wheels? Isn´t the only reason, why manufacturers are moving from using central differential to any kind of electronically controlled multi-plate clutch packs the space and cost saving?

+moh bel Mitsubishi's S-AWC is one of the best systems on the market, right up there with Subaru's X-Mode. What you really need for a Canada Winter are real snow tires. In the US auto makers love to fit "all seasons" on SUVs. They are crap in all seasons. I don't know the traffic laws in Canada but I guess they are a bit stricter. Here in Austria all season tires are allowed all year but Summer tires are only allowed from April to October. I have real Winter tires (215 on 16" rims) on my Outlander during the Winter months, Summer tires are 225 on 17".

Good tests, but more diagonal runs next time please. I was hoping to watch how the active diff / traction control responded to a front tire off the ground.

The vehicle is fairly front heavy as a result of the engine. There weren't scenarios while I was driving that the front came up, even at angles. That said, the front diff has a "locking" clutch pack, so most of the torque will be routed to the tire with traction, unlike the rear diff which splits 50/50.

SHADY3k I'd say yes. I've spent a good amount of time in a crosstrek and I prefer this vehicle over it. I own the 2016 Outlander GT with the V6 and it easily kicks the ass of any newer Subaru. The CVT transmission are garbage so if your looking go with the GT. It's fast and is perfect in the snow with the awd.

geleyo G Easy answer. This. More options at a lower sticker price. Get the GT outlander with the V6 and you'll be really happy with it. Subaru is overrated. Google search subaru outback CVT reverse test and you'll see that an outback can't even backup over a curb due to the low torque of a CVT.

a9005 Not many people know this thing the CVT performance and yes you are right. I had a Subaru 2012 it could not do reverse climb in 15 degree trail road and got me stuck for help. It's amazing to the outlander does that with their CVT. Subaru today is somewhat overrated.

Great car if you not afraid of Mitsu nameplate and you might not have dealer close by Killer rebates makes them much cheaper than 2row RAV or CRV. I got year old 7000 mi V6 Gt leather nav 3 row for $25,000, Pilot or highlander with that much trim is $40,000 used $45,000 new. Midsize car 3 row for price of 2 row compact, maybe not as good as best but roughly comparable to explorer, outback, pilot, highlander, better than rav or CRV.

I own the v6 in the OC, the one thing was there is no lights on the door controls so i fixed it. I place a 3.00 light that has a sensor for light and motion.

I see a lot of talk in comparison to the forester but what about to the 2.5 outback you did..road comfort, off road comfort and which would you prefer for daily use with slight off road use?

+Kevin Marron The Outback was more comfortable, I believe it comes in at a higher price point though. Off-road I'm not sure, I believe the Outback has open front and rear (though it will use braking to minimize slip). I'll be getting the Forester in next year and hopefully can do some similar testing.

I have the v6 version and in eco mode doing about 60 on the highway the computer has said up to 29mpg. So the 4cyl doing 28 seems like a big downgrade. perhaps it's elevation ect?

Hey, so i have a problem with my car. After I got it, the Manual transmission shifter would start squeaking, I went to the dealership and all they did was lubricate it. Now a couple of weeks later, it is starting to squeak again. What could be the problem? Am i doing something wrong when shifting/driving manual?

Good review. Seems to be a good competitor for the Forester whose AWD appears to be superior to most vehicles in this class. Looks like you can get the V6 in the Mitsubishi for the same $$.
