This is actually the best review i've ever seen, because you really understand what a car is and who's buying it, you've really found the point. Yeah we're car enthusiasts and yes we love power but we're minority in car consumers, and most car reviewers are car enthusiast and most of the time they end their videos saying that they're boring cars because they lack of power and torque, and those cars don't have that racing purpose at all. I'm a BIG fan of you and i've seen like 90 percent of your videos and I love the abilities of transmmiting ideas that you have, it's amazing! You think in everything so everything is easy to follow, learn and understand for people that are not engineers and do not know nothing about cars, you're amazing and your recording and editing skills as well because as we can see, you do it all by yourself. Greetings from El Salvador (smallest country in central america) and keep it up buddy!

Thank you for the honest review. It's nice to hear someone actually rate this car for what it is - its incredible how some reviews on youtube expect a 300hp/dual clutch on these things. it costed me roughy $100/year to regularly maintain a corolla in the day. Reliable Park, Drive, Reverse car that will serve 200k miles easily.

Great review. I just helped my daughter purchased the same model few months ago. Why Corolla? We have 2003 Corolla CE with 630,000 km and still drives like a year old car. The only thing that was replaced in the engine is just the starter at 475,000 km. The front suspension was replaced at 420,000 km, sway bar at 530,000 km, wheel bearing in both front and rear at driver's side at 425,000 km, rear wheel bearing at passenger's side at 600,000km, the other is still original. The rest are original other than the normal replacement of spark plugs, pcv valve, serpentine belt, brake pads. The front rotor is still original! Yes the rotor is 630,000 km. This car is driven around 57,000 km per year, all summer and winter here in Toronto. The only maintenance I regularly do is oil change, cleaning of throttle body and MAF sensor. Drive it normally and I still average 15 km/l during summer and 14 km/l during winter. Ofcourse you have to be a safe and courteous driver to have the car live this long. Am I lucky to continue enjoy driving this car or the fact remains that if you treat any kind of car properly that it will reward you with long reliable vehicle. By the way, since owning this 2003 Corolla CE, only 2 ocassions this car failed to start. First, when after 5 years the battery reached it life, and secondly, when the starter failed. This car just simply starts in all kind of weather condition. Thank you toyota. You are the car that is fun to drive and own.

Funny how people throw around adjectives to describe Corolla such as "economic & affordable", like they can just throw around 21k-18k effortlessly or are they just completely oblivious of how that actually sounds to MOST people world wide and even in the US that's a significant amount of money, given the frequency at which most people in US could say that.

Great review. I'm a Mechanical Engineering student myself, and I bought a 2017 Corolla SE to replace my "fun & unreliable" MINI Clubman S. Most reviewers snobbishly pan the car, but it's a decent driver, and it's rock-solid reliable. This is my first Japanese car, after having a go with American and Europeans for the last 17 years. That is more important than anything else, speaking from the viewpoint of someone who just ditched a sport-tuned, turbocharged British/German car that cost 50% of purchase price in maintenance. From an engineering perspective, that "measly" 132 horsepower, dated engine design translates to higher fatigue endurance limits in the powertrain, has collectively accumulated billions of miles of proven performance, has had the benefit of incremental iterative refinements, all of which are far superior to a "cutting-edge" design that may diminish the car's reliability. Nobody who even looks at this car cares about speed, maneuverability, or uniqueness; they care about getting from point A to B with minimal fuss and unpleasant surprises. Toyota knows who their audience is, and 50 years of production speaks for itself. A Corolla is not meant to be a track car, it's meant to be the car that goes 250,000 miles without a sweat, and without denting your wallet. The car is a good performer, the engine bay facilitates easy long-term maintenance, and it has adequate power for 99% of driving. I like my Corolla, and kudos for a technical review that focuses on its individual merits.

wardgregg2001 After having the car for about a month and a half, I'm still very happy. I've watched some comparison videos with other cars in its class like the Mazda 3 and Honda civic and have drawn these conclusions... The Mazda 3 is the most sporty & fun to drive and the Honda Civic is the most youthful & modern tech featured. The Corolla seems the most refined and grown up. ..in other words, my Corolla S Plus feels like I could park it next to an Audi A4 or BMW 3 series and it would fit in. The LED highlights are a win and the S Plus features make it the only version I'd buy. Very happy overall.

People always want to say that cars like this is boring. Hello! I work at a Dollar Store who sometimes want to go to the mall, or the movies, and sometimes want to go out of town that my maybe 40 minutes or an hour away from where I live. Like whether it has the features of a sports car or not is of little importance to me. I care about gas mileage so that I can save a buck or two. I just want a nice dependable car that is going to last me a long time if I take good care of it. That's all.

The reputation Toyota has for boring, economy car is really rooted in the American and European mindset that I'd call, First World Problems. This mindset made Toyota create separate brands for luxury cars, Lexus in the first place. If you look at the models Toyota offers in the Asian, Australian and JDM market; Toyota has some luxurious and exciting models that rival or even surpass its sibling Lexus has to offer. Examples include Toyota Crown, Crown Majesta sedans and Alphard/Vellfire minivans. Search them in google and see what I'm talking about.

I really like the format of your reviews, covering every aspect of the car - the mechanics, the exterior, the interior, the tech features. the driving experience, fuel economy, pros n cons. I've always believed that engineers make great car reviewers, and this is excellent proof ! Please teach other reviewers a thing or two because this is how a car should be reviewed ! Engineering Explained I really think that this segment of your channel IS going to see a lot of popularity because, even though the engineers in your audience (like myself) enjoy learning theory, and it's great that you have videos that explain auto tech theory, most people (I think) like to see that theory applied, and people can better relate to actual cars than theoretical concepts (again, I enjoy the theory very much, but just speaking for the majority). So, keep up the good work ! And, it just so happens, that you do car reviews very well, so you're stuck with doing them :P

This was my first car ('16 Corolla S+ CVT). Lease for two years. Decent car, some QC issues I noticed on the paint and windows so I wouldn't buy one without a thorough inspection. Noise level is pretty quiet on the highway (compared to an Impreza hatch). S (sport) mode is fun, higher gears ratio but eats gas obviously, the steering feels a notch heavier too. In sport mode it gets around 26mpg for me. For a college student/work this is a good commuter car and you can fit 4 passengers with plenty of room. The only thing I dislike is how small the brakes are in this car. I always feel like I'm on its limits but maybe I just drive too fast. For highways, just flick the sport mode on to merge or pass cars and off you go but regular mode does feel really slow. It does have that dual-purpose personality; one for an older person that can use this as a daily cost effective commuter and the second one for the younger college kids first car that doesn't break the bank. $2100 down $99/month deal.

You have to increase your mileage trip distance. ~50 miles is not even 2 gallons of gas, and is not a long enough distance to get a reasonably accurate MPG rating in a variety of conditions and situations. In your videos you have consistently gotten WAY higher mileage numbers than just about any other reviewer out there and I believe this is the reason. Great videos other wise - very detailed.
@EngineeringExplained
@EngineeringExplained 9 жыл бұрын
Hazdazos The reason I get better mpg (aside from maybe a 5-10% error in reading) is because maximum speeds are low and I drive pretty efficiently (especially on this course, which I know very well). The MPG numbers I post are certainly possible, but could have approx 5-10% error from what I've discussed with people who understand this much more than I.

I am interested in getting a Corolla. But have read about a bunch of CVT issues. Comparing the design of a CVT vs a conventional automatic transmission, It looks like the CVT would have a lot of wear and tear from the rubbing of the V-belt against the metal pulley. Which should cause a lot of metal particulates to be floating around in the CVT fluid. The older Corollas are known to be bulletproof, and was wondering if these CVT Corollas will hold up.

Dont really understand why people complain about performance of the new corollas, its not a sport car, it will never be like the 1986 gts, its made for daily driving. If people wanted a sports corolla, get a 1985-86 gts twincam, rwd and fun to drive. I own a 1980 toyota corolla 1.8 and it has the ultimate sports feel despite i did put mods in the car to put down 150hp on 2300 lbs but its fun to drive just like my 98 impreza gc8

Finally. Someone that agrees with me. I think the Toyota Corolla drives excellent with the CVT and the engine that it has. I have a 2017 with 30,000 miles on it. Yes at start off it is not the fastest car but if you're on the highway going 55 or 60 miles an hour and you want to pass somebody it will go around someone quite quickly with the way that CVT operates.

I loved the 2014 Corolla S when I had one as a loner, but not enough to buy one and trust the long term reliability of a belt and pulley CVT. People like to point out the reliability of the Prius CVT, but the Prius has an eCVT, which doesn't have a belt and pulley and is an entirely different type of transmission. I did test drive a 2014 Corolla L trim with the 4 speed AT, but the 4 speed just made the Corolla unappealing to drive. The skinnier tires of the Corolla L added to its unappealing to drive nature. I opted for a 2013 Civic EX with 5 speed AT, it's much better than the Corolla 4 speed and the 2013 Civic's handling is amazing! The multi-link fully independent rear suspension in the Civic just blows away the semi-independent torsion beam suspension in the Corolla. But the 2013 Civic EX has its flaws. I do admit that I like the 2014 Corolla S's instrument layout more than the 2013 Civic. The two tier instrument panel in the Civic is gimicky IMO. My eyeballs don't simultaneously see upper and lower levels at the same time because I'm not a chameleon! I'd rather have both analog, side by side tach and speedo in the Corolla. The 5 inch display in the 2013 Civic looks more like a 3 inch display when it displays the backup camera because it's further away, to the right in the upper tier instrument panel. I'm thinking of getting an aftermarket head unit to get a proper sized backup camera display for my Civic. The Bluetooth in the 2013 Civic EX is slow to pair with my phone, sometimes taking over 30 seconds. The same phone pairs with a Bluetooth speaker or Bluetooth headphones in just a couple of seconds. And the 2014 Corolla S comes with paddle shifters and a smart key, which you don't get in a 2013 Civic EX.

I prefer the Civic over the Corolla. I've driven both and the Corolla was so boring, the Civic was fun to drive. I also like how the Civic is a lower. But I can't say the Corolla is a bad car, because it isn't. Both the Civic and Corolla are both good cars. You can't go wrong with either of them, take care of them do regular maintenance and it will last you for ever.

I am really hoping to buy a 2005 Corolla, they are very common where I am and are known for reliability and economy. Corolla's just well made and fit the needs of the average person that's why they are one of the best selling cars plus they hold their value very well.

Agreed. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this vehicle. I expected everything to feel cheap - the only two things that looked/felt cheap were the gauge cluster (by day, at night it looks fine when backlit), and the rear cupholders.

Have had my 2016 since new and the only thing I've replaced is the tires, car is absolutely solid and dependable. If you live in a warm climate invest in some quality summer tires like the Michelin PS4S, car will handle like a gokart but is still quiet and comfortable to daily drive

In 2017, Toyota made several safety features standard, that are optional on other cars. It's part of Toyota's Safety Sense package. The SE replaces the S. Also, leather seats and heated seats are optional and so is heated steering wheel.

man... you had some really awesome shots this video. I was really thrown away at the shot of the left gopro as you where driving through those green hills. Anyways, I think that improvement in your production may be the only thing these reviews are missing. Not to say that its bad, Its just that every other detail about these reviews are great. And that improvement in editing and production seems to be the only thing that would make your videos even better.
