Hey Jason, love your videos. You’ve done a good job here. But just one little thing you have missed here. The Nevera does NOT drop in power because of battery derating nor is it overheating. If I remember correctly, it might have reached 35 °C in that run, which is very far from the maximum temperature. The power drops because the motors are reaching their maximum speed due to the transmission ratio. As you well know, with single speed gearboxes like in Nevera, there is a trade off between acceleration and top speed. We figured that 412 km/h was plenty and did not want to compromise on acceleration. So basically, the battery could deliver 1.4 MW for a lot longer if the powertrain could take it (longer ratio). The drop in power is due to the motor power curves which drop off at the end of the RPM range and the car reaching its equilibrium speed at max RPM. As for the Tourbillon top speed - as you said… Let’s see 🤓 Would love to geek out on some other stuff you’re talking about here.

**Important Note!** If you made it to the end, it's important to understand that the ~68% (or ~72%) discharge rate is absolute not a rule of thumb, just a fun guestimation. Every battery is unique, and will have its own unique characteristics. Also, looking at Rimac's latest high speed run, they achieved 412 km/h with *much* higher power after prolonged acceleration (the car was delivering 1225 kW at 412 km/h, or 87% of the peak 1408 kW). Porsche's T-Hybrid battery is also rated for "continuous" power at 41 kW, versus a peak of 48 kW - that's roughly 85%. So perhaps 70% is a low estimate, though it is accurate for the context of the original Rimac top speed run, and we don't have many of these data points (because top speed runs are a challenging thing to put together). Just some added context! Will be interesting to see some real world tests with the Tourbillon. Thanks for watching everyone!!

Btw Andy Wallace (Bugatti test driver) said that during the Top speed run for Chiron 300+ when they reached 490kmph, the car was still pulling, they simply ran out of space to push the car to its limit. So the power required as mentioned here can essentially be lower i.e. 1800 HP can do the job.
@L0p3s6 ай бұрын
Right, but this new Bugatti has a totally different PU. I knew that about Andy Wallace, but if you watch this entire video you understand why getting to 500kph is very difficult. If it was 1800hp in the Chiron SS 300+ with the turbo W16 it would easily get to 500kph. The EV component is the problem here with the Tourbillon. And the EV component is 44% of the total power output.

@@SidRay1760 off course, they’re the opposite of idiots. @L0p3s6 ай бұрын
@@NadeemAhmed-nv2br maybe, but I find the EV part a great challenge nevertheless. Yes, it is lower and a as less FA, but a turbo ICE is more straightforward. But let’s wait and see. This is a husiness after all and we had the Veyron SS with 200 extra hp in the past and the Chiron SS 300+ with lots of modifications to achieve the 490kph and surpass 300mph.

Mate said that the Tourbillon battery has Imersion cooling. Which mean it has the best cooling method technology at the moment. These new dielectric liquid are ultra performant. So holding 25C discharge rate is not a problem and sustained power is also improved even at the end of discharge SOC curve. The new cells they are using are ultra performant ultra low Internal resistance. Also One of the reason you see the power is decreasing on the Nevera is because the BEMF of the motor is getting close to the battery voltage so it become more and more difficult to continu pushing phase current to the motor( which is related to torque) as the difference of both( or the potential difference) is narrowing. The use of Field weakining generation to conteract that is not efficient so more and more heat is generated.

For an engineering guy, I think you went over what a tourbillon is kinda quickly (aka not at all). In a mechanical watch, the accuracy of the watch will be affected by a wheel going back and forth to tick the movement, powered by a spring (this is called the balance wheel). The thing is, the rhythm of that wheel will be affected by its orientation (depending on the position of your arm wearing the watch). A tourbillon is a very complex mechanism found on very high end watches that will constantly spin the balance wheel, therefore equalizing the variances created by the position of your arm. Bugatti see themselves as the very best of car engineering and a tourbillon is pretty much the very best of mechanical watch engineering. The pinnacle measure of a car performance is speed and Bugatti has loads of that. The pinnacle measure of a watch performance is accuracy a tourbillon gives you that.
@benshiotsu85535 ай бұрын

And furthermore, with dismissing mechanical watches out of hand. Yes, some of them are incredibly overpriced luxury goods, however, they are still absolute engineering marvels. Highly complicated mechanical watches do things with gears that might be "easily done with software" but to do it in hardware, in something small enough to fit on your wrist, is one of the peaks of engineering prowess IMO. Also, they don't have to be $500,000, or $50,000, or $5,000, or even $500. I don't enjoy mechanical watches as a way to tell time so much as a way to appreciate the incredible engineering that goes into making them work.

It's a whole lot easier, cheaper and more accurate to have a watchmaker adjust the timing of the watch then to implement tourbillon complications. Easier/cheaper still to just buy pretty much any quartz watch or smartwatch. Tourbillons exist not because they work especially well; they exist because they are hideously complicated and expensive and that's why idiots that buy ridiculous watches like Richard Mille and Jacob products buy them. Because what good is wealth that you can't rub peoples' noses in?

In an interview about the Tourbillon, Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace said that during his record breaking run with the Chiron SS, that the car was still pulling at 304 mph and the length of the track straight kept him from being about to gas it. He had to begin slowing down to cover the sweeping corner of the track and had to guess where the deceleration zone was since nobody else had ever driven that fast at the Ehra-Lessien track before.... so even the Chiron SS was capable of more than 304 mph.

So, a 25 kw hr battery is ok because it reduces cO2 in urban areas. This is why ( I think) The Tourbillion won't be hitting 500km per hr. in speed unless he bends some of his own rules. Damaging in cities are unburned hydrocarbons and monoxide, plus rogue extras from fuel impurity (sulfers, etc), oil from lubrication, etc. The CO2 levels in the atmosphere were 10-20 times as much in the jurassic age. The world was very lush, green. It took millions of years for climate change to actually become a problem, through a big celestial impact. Climatologists say that their science s settled, which is the most unscientific thing one can ever say, let alone about one's own work. Geologists, astronomers, biologists, archaeologists, ethnologists, none can find a place and time of stable climate. It's changing right now on other planets. Greenhouse farmers buy CO2 to release in enclosures. To feed you and more people at a minimum cost. It's fine to walk inside, we can handle some extra CO2.

I think the most interesting thing is how causally these power numbers are talked about anymore. Think back to 2005 when the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo came out with 750hp and did 0-60 in 2.8 and ten to fifteen years later you can get a 4 door Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye with 47 more horse power.

@ChrisBigBad5 ай бұрын
To spare my car (Nissan Leaf) this embarrassment, it has a digital speedo so no one can see how low the top-speed is. It is 149kph (/w GPS. the car boldly claims 160), which it does reach with some quiet labors, but seems quite happy there - car-wise. I.e. does not feel like dying. Not battery-wise. Doing top-speed eats the puny 24kwh battery (or the 80% that are left of it after 10-ish years) like candy. haha ^^

One thing I noticed watching the Bugatti tach sim at 7:45 is as it's approaching that limited top speed, you can see the electric motor out put on the right most gauge, the smaller hand of the dial hovers between about 750-800 hp and only stays maxed out for a few seconds before drastically dropping to zero. What's more interesting is that it does this before the v16 lets of the throttle so maybe the speed limit is only applied as a restriction on the duration the e motor gets full power? We didn't see the graduation e motor output degradation like the Nevera, just a sharp drop so it definitely has a few more kph in the tank 🤔

One thing I am curious about: To reach a Top Speed of >500 km/h, besides the power delivery, you would need special tires for it, dont you? I know the SS Chiron had specially developed michelin tires (i think) but they were crafted for speeds up until 500 km/h if I remember that right. A video explaining what specifications a tire has to have to be able to support speeds over 500 (if its possible) would be really interesting!

Hi Jason. I’ve followed your videos for a long time and as an amateur physicist (tertiary level physics but unfortunately not hard wired for it like you and the best physicists are) I love the clarity you bring to your explanations of how physics applies to motoring technology, in particular, engines. As a baby boomer I don’t think I will ever fully embrace electric only technology so I hope that some form of ICE continues into the future, but not optimistic (just to be clear, I’m a climate change believer!). Please keep these wonderful videos coming as they perfectly complement other videos that give us mere mortals a chance to experience some amazing cars.

Carrol Shelby had the best explanation as to why one would want a high horsepower street car. When asked by an interviewer if he thought that his high-power street Mustangs were too powerful he said: "too much horsepower is just about the right amount to have". I totally subscribe to his point of view.

4:29 we reached the point when someone says "decently quick" for a 800hp motor 🤣. But jokes aside, AWD plugin hybrid makes sense to be lighter than the Chiron simply because you can make the battery structural component of the body, you're removing lot of weight by getting rid of 4 turbos and tubing and intercoolers and the ICE AWD components (they're replaced by only software telling the motors what to do).

I loved their PR for the Chiron. "We need someone to make special tires to go 300+ mph." Hard flex. I am sure they will find a way with the Tourbillion.
@chuckschillingvideos5 ай бұрын
It isn't just going to 300mph that's an issue - it's finding tires that can go 300 mph for more than a couple minutes or so without requiring replacement. Oh, and on public roads, which aren't glass smooth and have all kinds of debris on them.
@Tippotipo4 ай бұрын
@@chuckschillingvideos Such tires already exists on Chiron SS 300+ as they are x-rays for minimal imperfections. Having debris on road while running above 280 mph is asking for trouble as a single perforation from such debris in the tire can be catastrophic. Those are new overlooked factors to take account. Michelin is currently the only manufacturer to do extreme tires thanks to their experience with Bugatti for over twenty years.

We have to take into consideration that 1000 HP is the maximal power that the V16-engine puts out at a certain rpm. As long as the engine is not spinning at that exact rpm the power output is less. It depends on the gearing if the car is then still able to reach speeds close to 500 km/h. Still, I enjoyed following your calculations a lot! 👍
@dana58654 ай бұрын
The point of using v16 tech is not the engine itself. It can be possible thanks to Rimac's proper packaging of the electric power and battery plus aero elements. Even turbo tech can't be used from the inception because this also pushes the weight distribution worse since those turbos should be situated around the engine. It uses the most promising floor and diffuser designs. They will put some active adjustable elements to reduce the fluctuation of the downforce to compensate for the road condition esp at high speed.
@kristjanveski6 ай бұрын
Totally agree about watches, and about this engine. This is such an exciting car, makes me giddy like I was as a kid looking at the concepts in auto mags. The combination of purist performance and technology is perfect. I also doubt it will hit 500, but we know there will be a Super Sport..
