Hey Jason, love your videos. You’ve done a good job here. But just one little thing you have missed here. The Nevera does NOT drop in power because of battery derating nor is it overheating. If I remember correctly, it might have reached 35 °C in that run, which is very far from the maximum temperature. The power drops because the motors are reaching their maximum speed due to the transmission ratio. As you well know, with single speed gearboxes like in Nevera, there is a trade off between acceleration and top speed. We figured that 412 km/h was plenty and did not want to compromise on acceleration. So basically, the battery could deliver 1.4 MW for a lot longer if the powertrain could take it (longer ratio). The drop in power is due to the motor power curves which drop off at the end of the RPM range and the car reaching its equilibrium speed at max RPM. As for the Tourbillon top speed - as you said… Let’s see 🤓 Would love to geek out on some other stuff you’re talking about here.

**Important Note!** If you made it to the end, it's important to understand that the ~68% (or ~72%) discharge rate is absolute not a rule of thumb, just a fun guestimation. Every battery is unique, and will have its own unique characteristics. Also, looking at Rimac's latest high speed run, they achieved 412 km/h with *much* higher power after prolonged acceleration (the car was delivering 1225 kW at 412 km/h, or 87% of the peak 1408 kW). Porsche's T-Hybrid battery is also rated for "continuous" power at 41 kW, versus a peak of 48 kW - that's roughly 85%. So perhaps 70% is a low estimate, though it is accurate for the context of the original Rimac top speed run, and we don't have many of these data points (because top speed runs are a challenging thing to put together). Just some added context! Will be interesting to see some real world tests with the Tourbillon. Thanks for watching everyone!!

I'm pretty sure the E-Motors at the front axels are not able to exceed max. speed. Do they have a clutch to disconnect them? At some point it's rear wheel drive only. Also the other E-Motors don't have max power at max. speed. I like your calculation but its very theoretical.

Mate said that the Tourbillon battery has Imersion cooling. Which mean it has the best cooling method technology at the moment. These new dielectric liquid are ultra performant. So holding 25C discharge rate is not a problem and sustained power is also improved even at the end of discharge SOC curve. The new cells they are using are ultra performant ultra low Internal resistance. Also One of the reason you see the power is decreasing on the Nevera is because the BEMF of the motor is getting close to the battery voltage so it become more and more difficult to continu pushing phase current to the motor( which is related to torque) as the difference of both( or the potential difference) is narrowing. The use of Field weakining generation to conteract that is not efficient so more and more heat is generated.

In an interview about the Tourbillon, Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace said that during his record breaking run with the Chiron SS, that the car was still pulling at 304 mph and the length of the track straight kept him from being about to gas it. He had to begin slowing down to cover the sweeping corner of the track and had to guess where the deceleration zone was since nobody else had ever driven that fast at the Ehra-Lessien track before.... so even the Chiron SS was capable of more than 304 mph.

"Some rich guys like watches......" Having spent several decades in or around Houston and being NASA aware all the time, AND having once sold a car to an Astronaut, the watches they wore to the moon always fascinated me. As I transitioned from a job with the Volvo factory to one with a new Mercedes dealership and was being paid by both(!) I decided it was time for a nice watch. So, in 1976, I purchased the Omega Speedmaster and have had it for almost 48 years. A little treasure and a piece of history on my wrist. I love to show people the caseback, where circling its perimeter it says "Certified by NASA for all manned space missions." And, in the era when mine was made ('71- '74 as nearly as I can tell), in the center it says "First watch worn on the moon." And a new one today costs 28 times what I paid back in the day. I'm not now and never have been rich but I really like my watch!

Looking at the tachometer footage, I saw that the output of the electric motors starts dropping to zero as the car hits 444km/h, then goes up to 445km/h before it decelerates. IMO this suggests that the car needs *only* 1000bhp to maintain 445km/h, the top speed the car is limited to i.e. the drag coefficient is lower than the figures suggested here.

So the obvious question is can you vary the batter output from the engine to be only additive such that you aren't "flooring it" (max drain) but are say at 50% on the battery but 100% on the gas engine? Wouldn't that prevent the heating issue allowing you to go faster?

In the end you say in order to acheive that top speed it needs more power... do you mean more battery power? Regarding the ideal difuser angle, I beleive it varies with the speed where you want max efficiency. And the starting point of the difuser ramp is related to where you want your aero centre pressure point.

The difference between an expensive watch and an expensive car is the following: the expensive watch is actually worse than a cheap one. A mechanical expensive watch will be less precise at its own job: telling time. When an expensive car is supposed to be faster, or better at doing certain stuff, maybe more comfortable, more silent, more powerful. The only positive point of an expensive watch is that it's "prettier", But at its job, an expensive watch is worse than a cheap watch. That may be why you don't find expensive watches attractive but you do like cars.

Electric motors can make 100% of their torque at 0 rpm but their power always falls off at the top end of their speed range (because physics). Everyone gears their EV motors for acceleration and efficiency but not top speed. So the front motors will be significantly down on available power regardless of the battery at top speeds. This is also why the Nevera output scales down at top speed.

In typical Bugatti fashion they will most likely make a few crazy special editions, one of which will surely be made just to break that 500km/h milestone. I feel like they gave us clues on how they're gonna accomplish that. So each of the three electric motors is capable of producing 400hp but are limited by the battery, so in theory if they make the battery capable of giving those three motors all of those 400hp we're looking at a 2200hp car.

@davidbee95633 ай бұрын
How do you calculate the power required to accelerate at higher speeds? in drag racing the power increase to cut 1 second off a 1/4 mile time becomes significant. So while there still maybe power available the car just won't accelerate any more to increase the speed. Or to put it in different terms. I might be able to generate the power to go 60kph on my bicycle. But unless I can generate the power to acclerate from 50 to 60 kph, I won't be able to do it without a tailwind or downhill. That is why you need to do a two way run average to measure top speed. Something that may be a limiter for hybrid/electric cars more so than ICE.
@yojoa-vn5ph3 ай бұрын
Excuse me Jason... 😅😅I dont agree with you on Tourbillon's aero figures you re guessing... I know it s just your assumptions... Concerning Frontal Area, I ve calculated it with Tourbillon's spec sheet dimensions and I also find 2.07 m2. But concerning Drag Coefficient, I think it is lower than ur 0.35 assumption. I estimate it to be circa 0.30 to 0.31. Explanation : it is lower, more athletic (words of Achim Anschdeit to Autocar in Summer 2023) and its rear diffuser reduces considerably drag in top speed mode versus Chiron's rear wing up. Plus, Mate said that they could have closed the engine bay to reduce drag but they didn t in order to see the v16. I think what he means by that is that Bugatti could have joined their competitors in terms of drag coefficient as less than 0.3 (Jesko absolut : 0.278 and SSC Tuatara : 0.279) but they didnt.

You're leaving out one primary subject: price. 4.1 million USD. Subtracting those four (?) lithium-ion batteries would make the car so much lighter, and most importantly, the upgraded V16 would exceed the car's speed. I really don't see the benefit of adding those batteries. Also, whatever happened to the manual transmission in these "supper cars?" Giving these high-powered cars an automatic transmission might be great for those who never took the time to learn how to drive a manual transmission, but it also gives these "new" drivers a death sentence. Another flaw in this car is rear-wheel drive, most likely not even a positraction rear-wheel drive, and not a full-time all-wheel drive......and please don't tell me that it is all-wheel drive with the battery system that won't last you more than ten to 20 miles. That's a double death sentence, meaning not only are you going to kill yourself but most likely hitting another car and taking them along with you. Great car so far.
