This is an accurate portrayal of a typical day in the life of what I do as an unemployed mechanical engineer with 4+ years of experience. I got my Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Boston University and Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tsinghua University.
The goal of this video is to share some of the struggles I face as an unemployed engineer throughout the job hunting process and how to live in the moment as well as deal with rejection/uncertainty.
If you are having trouble finding a job, don't fret because we all go through trials and tribulations before something great happens. The important thing is to live life to the fullest, learn from your mistakes, and never give up. It's only a matter of time before your next job offer!

Bro, love you. Everyone should enjoy their breakfast. But so many tomatoes (nightshades) and daily eggs could be detrimental. I've done the research. Letme know if you want to know more. If you get asian alcohol thrush, you could replace the breakfast with a diverse choice. I hope this is not a daily routine, that's where these two items may become risky over long time.

I'm a middle age mechanical engineer in a small company in a small city in the mid Atlantic US. We have the hardest time finding decent applicants. I get the impression most young folks focus all their attention on large companies or a few hotbed cities. There are plenty of small companies that would love to have applicants with your credentials. Don't forget to look under the little rocks too. Good luck!

I'm not from the US but I also found one of my first engineering jobs in a small-to-mid sized company after finishing bechelor's in uni. It's messier than huge companies but there's more opportunities to get closer to the manufacture process itself and get involved more directly with all stages of your projects. You can talk to the laser operators, welders, assemblers and improve yourself as a designer via direct feedback. That way you not only learn the best theoretical solutions but also all the small practical but extremely important nuances they don't teach you in higher education.

@scottp1100
@scottp1100 Жыл бұрын
@@shaunjay6040 Agree somewhat - Copper is used in things like wires, microstrip and coupled waveguide PCB traces, but it is very rarely in things like machined parts, antennas feeds, waveguide, roof mounts, ladders, washing machines, etc. You need to have a special use for it like enhanced electrical or thermodynamic conductivity. Aluminum variants like 6060 and 6061 are used everywhere. If someone wasn't well versed in when to use aluminum vs copper, that would be an interview fail. Copper costs a fortune and produces more toxic byproducts. Even when used (like handle bars for bacterial breakdown or electroform on waveguide for antennas), it's only a very thin layer of electroplating. Cost vs performance is a huge factor in all engineering choices. Copper is also three times as dense. You aren't going to make a space shuttle or airplane heat sinks out of it let alone a metal roof. If I was interviewing a mechanical or electrical engineer, and they said copper is best in all or even a majority of cases, then that would be a bad answer.

Im 69 and a retired electrical engineer and IT manager, I was laid off a couple of times in my working life but always just walked into another job within days but it was still stressful as I had a family etc. However what I didnt have was a huge education debt and massive competition in the workplace and I really feel you all you young guys who have heaps to offer and are being put through this incredibly stressful and demoralizing situation, while it might be a little relief to know you are not the only one it doesnt really help. I wish you well and I hope that this do work out for you. Companies are different these days, it would have been my recommendation not to change jobs often but I know there is no loyalty these days and its the companies fault in my opinion. So I cant offer you any advise other than try not to let this get you down. By the way I am retired but over my life time I have built up a very good workshop and I now have more work than I want fixing stuff that nobody else wants to attack so maybe building up your own personal resources is something to seriously consider when you do get back on your feet.

I'm an ME with a PE and an MBA. 12 jobs in my career, 2 of my own companies. Retired at 49. ME's are problem solvers. If no immediate job comes at us, we re-engineer ourselves and start companies where there's a need. They taught us not to whine, but to get up and make life happen. Just do it!

ME's are problem solvers because they enjoy solving problems. A person can get a ME degree because they think it's their ticket to earning cash to pursue their actual dreams like becoming a Tuber, or cooking, or whatever. They have no interest in mechanical engineering. They're do the work when forced. Most of their day is spent wishing they were someplace else. Those are not problem solvers. People actually interested in solving problems are not very common. Companies hire all kinds of people. Most are the type they have to force to work. Throw 20 MEs at a problem to get some result. But 1 ME interested in their work can get even better results. I was a software engineer in my career, worked in 14+ startups. Many of us worked 60+ hours a week and in our spare time wrote more code for other projects we wanted to do. We would have worked for free, and many did on side jobs. All that supercharged our skills. I did work with a few who really didn't like software engineering. Looked miserable to me. They were very intelligent and could get some work done so were kept on.

I never remember wishing I was working somewhere else...although that's probably more of a human nature thing. Yes, ME's do it all. That's why we adapt and become millionaires and retire early. ME's that couldn't cut it where you worked were just not taught well enough...drive is everything, no matter what Engineering degree you get. You need experience. Get it anywhere. University kids are useful for writing macros and short bits of code or doing FEA on generally safe applications. You need to obtain real-world experience with customer interaction on unique projects. After a while they all become ~the same. Your diploma means nothing....It just lets you in the door and allows you to observe others. Small shops are great as are larger engineering firms....but what you find is that tasks are simply spread out in larger firms....and it becomes harder to assign blame or take responsibility. Smaller shops = fuller experience....but greater responsibility. Smaller shops will progress you to your own business/corp faster.....but large corporations are a valuable experience so you learn how your customers operate. You need to relate to the high end engineering folk while also appealing to the maintenance crew. If you can appeal to maintenance....Engineering usual doesn't bark, provided it's a solid concept/design in the first place. Again...Experience... No one is out to stop you but yourself. You can't offer shit to anyone ...if you have not seen some yourself.

I’m actually surprised that mechanical engineers are having a hard time finding employment. I would’ve thought they would always be in high demand since it seems it was one of those fields like healthcare where we never have enough workers despite more programs over the last few decades and lots healthcare workers immigrating from places like Nigeria, India & China. It could be worse at least you have your degrees, many have debt w/o them. It may make more financial sense to make it less money and work for government/non-profit so you qualify for income based re-payment and discharge the loans after 120 payments (10 years). Don’t feel too bad, many STEM majors are not working in their field. Most importantly, you have a good degree from a reputable school and a foundation in math/science so its relatively easy to teach yourself new skills (after all that hell you went through in school) and its not hard to train STEMs for new skills. It does suck but, this is a time to explore options you never would’ve imagined. Many skilled, blue-collar and unionized workers make 6 figures (200k+) some don’t even have a HS education.

"I’m actually surprised that mechanical engineers are having a hard time finding employment" Yes, most people outside the field are. The Mechanical Engineering field is like the fields of: -Law -Acting -Professional Sports. There are too many people who want to be in that job, and not enough jobs for them. You know how in the Hollywood profession, it is possible for a successful actor to make one bad movie, and then get washed up? Go from a premium to a discount? The same is true for the Mechanical Engineering field. If your work record has too many short-term jobs on it, then you look like a job hopper. If your work record has too long of an employment gap on it, then you look like you are too out of practice. These are factors that can make a mechanical engineer all washed up. They get into a dilemma similar to what ex-convicts have.

I worked 16 years as a ME engineer for my first employer right after graduation. Completely burnt out at the end of my stint there so I quit. Took a couple years off to recover. Rediscovered my love for engineering so I went back university and did a masters, as well as a 1 year cert in AI. By then I was 50 and found out the hard way I am now radioactive waste as far as employability goes. Grateful to be working as a researcher in a large, well regarded research institute but I yearn to return to industry. In four years since my masters I have applied for numerous jobs in industry but only 1 interview. Age discrimination is for real. I guess I will start my own high tech engineering firm when one will employ me.

I graduated with honors at the top of my class with an overall gpa of 92% in Environmental Engineering. I proactively arranged weekly meetings with project managers seeking employment, but never could secure full time work after seeking intensely for 7 years. I finally gave up and left Canada to teach English in Japan for an annual salary of $25K over 12 years ago. Graduating from university is not always worth it. I also have a first degree in Chemistry, plus 2 College diplomas and professional certificates. It just cost me many years in time and money. @@Tonyscasa I know. Looking back, my entire experience is even hard for me to understand. I’m well educated, personable, articulate, have strong writing skills, strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, open minded, mature, well read in my profession, knowledgeable, have related experience... plus I’m tall, athletic, confident. What more could an employer want? I eventually figured out 2 possible reasons: 1) being a white male (!), and 2) perhaps being over qualified for entry-level Jr. Engineer positions and perceived to be under-qualified for project management. One would think being a white male would be irrelevant; however, this was a time in Canada 🇨🇦 when employers were perhaps under pressure to be perceived as providing ‘equal opportunity’. It just so happens my wife at the time who was of Indian descent and all my ‘non-white’ friends and colleagues ALL received multiple job offers very quickly. Some of them were less knowledgeable, even immature and had no relevant work experience, but were able to play the ‘ethnic card’ to get their foot in the door and get hired. I never wanted to believe this to be even remotely relevant, but the evidence I witnessed over the years spoke for itself. In addition, my focus was on securing employment in the prevention of pollution, rather than in clean up of pollution from past industrial activity. A segment of the market I was very passionate about, although I realized more of a smaller, more specialized - although arguably more proactive, important segment of Environmental Engineering/Management field. Seeking employment for 8 years pretty much ended my career before it even had a chance to begin. It had a tremendous impact on my life, far more than I realized at the time. To this day, about 20 years later, many of my classmates who graduated with second-class grades who all secured employment, all have successful upper management positions now and will remain employed in their chosen profession until retirement. Due to Covid here in Japan, I lost my full time teaching position in 2020 and have been surviving on minimal part time teaching. Further, I’ve been unemployed since December of 2022 since my school’s student enrollment never recovered. I’m still in Japan, currently seeking remote, online employment, but haven’t found anything yet.

It's been a while since i studied mechanics. So, any thoughts and corrections would be helpful Question 1: Copper (metals with more free electrons, besides being better conductors, are better conductors of heat). Question 2: variable h (thickness) Question 3: Initially increases in oven and decreases when cooled. The final answer is decreased. (Funny story about people using a torch and thermal expansion, see below) Question 4: Hmmm, b. yield strength Question 5: Not too clear. I am supposed to choose the left or right, but to decrease the moment of inertia, one would be to have more of the mass concentrated towards the center...........assuming you can not change material with lower density. Obviously, the left has a lower moment of inertia than the right. If the geometry is to be angular (not rounded edges), the left side is fine, but the right side, decrease the length of c, which would increase the length of b, but stop when c=b. Story, came across a pair of guys trying to loosen the crank bolt for the timing belt on a vehicle. (They can have torques higher than 140 ft lbs). The two young men were heating the bolt with a propane torch and melting the timing belt cover made out of plastic. I asked what they were doing. They replied, "Trying to loosen the timing belt bolt." I answered that by heating the bolt, you are making it expand against the engine block more. If anything, you want the engine block warm and the bolt cool. They looked at me and stopped using the torch. I also said that crack bolts tend to have reverse threads. So, where you think you might be loosening the bolt, you're ending up tightening the bolt. But before you do any more damage, look up a video or manual.

Question 2 would be either L, the beams length, or h, the height of the beam Question 4 is actually c, the ultimate tensile strength. Yield strength is simply where the material begins to undergo plastic deformation, whereas tensile strength is where the material actually fails Question 5 is very unclear. My first thought was that they were attempting to ask "how do you decrease the area moment of inertia," but that wouldn't make sense in the cross section of a beam. You'd want to increase the area moment of inertia to decrease stresses/strains/deflection in the beam (think I-beams). If they did mean moment of inertia, you'd want to make it a circular rod.
@ItsNotAllRainbows_and_Unicorns
@ItsNotAllRainbows_and_Unicorns Жыл бұрын
@@Hunter-lm6to Thx for the clarification. I think in Q 2, it would be L. I looked up the deflection formula of cantilever beam and thickness, h is not part of the equation, but L is. @Hunter-lm6to
@Hunter-lm6to Жыл бұрын
@@ItsNotAllRainbows_and_Unicorns In regards to Q2, h is in the equation, just hidden behind another variable. In the maximum beam deflection formula, PL^3/3EI, "I" is the second moment of area, which for a rectangular cross-section is bh^3/12. L and h are both raised to the power of 3, so both have the same magnitude of impact on the deflection of the beam.

Life is a struggle and our biological needs do most of the string pulling including getting bored with one state of well-being, and searching for others; even if this may bring some stress and discomfort to ourselves. It wouldn't surprise me if us making the unknown known through our lives is what drives us through life to serve the nature of something far greater than ourselves that we're currently unaware of right now.

I used to be an atheist, but changed my mind after reading about QFT and its possible relationship to the Akasha, which I used to think was a crackpot idea. Don't sit on your laurels! You meet most of the qualifications to be a wastewater treatment facility operator, with huge upward mobile potential since you have an advanced engineering degree!! Apply at one that still uses anaerobic digesters. I'm retired from a wastewater facility which did have anaerobic digesters and it was amazing. The trend over last few decades is away from natural processes and toward greater reliance on chemical additives. I'm pro-Nature. Of course, at entry level, I'd suggest keeping such bias to ones' self. With an engineering degree, in the industry of wastewater, you could be making really good money just staying in operations. But within a few yrs, you could move into management positions in wastewater etc.. Just visit any big city HR dept. and tell them you're interested in wastewater operations openings. I'd advise avoiding private sector, corporate ("for profit') wastewater treatment/management companies, and stick with public sector, municipalities or water districts etc..

That's strange. I have never been unemployed for long in Engineering. There is work everywhere. Also, I never had to do any kind of test. Maybe apply for smaller companies at first, so that you can build experience. Later in life, you will have more options. You are very young. Be patient !
