Most software engineers are living in expensive areas like bay area, new York etc. here high salaries are not useful because of high living costs. but mechanical engineering companies are in less expensive places where living costs are low and those salaries are attractive.

@akshaykumarvyas
@akshaykumarvyas 3 ай бұрын
@@aminbusiness3139 250k salary comes with stocks and bonuses. In reality it's around 120-130k . then there are huge taxes. 90k salary is mostly without stocks and bonuses. And taxes are less as these states dont tax its citizens heavily. Rents are very low in these states and groceries are cheaper, car parking is cheaper and mostly free. Also working hours are sustainable unlike software engineers.

As a EE I am doing much better than most software guys I know. I was in the Navy's nuclear officer program and got paid to go to school. graduated debt free, with $40k in the bank, and a C7. I ended up getting medically retired really early due to a illness. Now I make over $100k and get VA compensation as well plus other veterans benefits like a VA loan. I'm working as a civilian EE on a air force base designing RF stuff and they are paying for my MSEE. After all expenses I save about $2k minimum. I don't have any student loans which is nice. After a year I go to the next pay grade which pays about $130k/150k. Keep in mind, a big ass 2 story house here is like $500k vs a small 2 bedroom house in silicon valley is $2M. So if you work in tech making $500k you will pay like 4x your salary for a small house built in the 70s. Vs here I pay 3x for a very nice 4 bedroom house.

I think for mechanical engineering to design a physical product for example designing and producing an Iphone there are multiple costs associated like there are labor cost (design engineer, process engineer, assembler, procuring engineer etc..), hardware costs, maintenance cost, machinery cost, material costs, assembly costs, process costs like plating, shipping costs, CAD software subscription cost plus don't forget additional costs due to Engineering change notices if product don't work as intended all those costs adds up in mechanical engineering which eats up from company's profit hence company can't pay much to mechanical engineers meanwhile for software engineer, there are only two costs labor costs and programming software subscription costs and there are no engineering change notices in software that can cost money hence companies can afford to pay more to software engineers due to low costs. Wish i understood this in college i would have never studied mechanical engineering.

You guys give most of us careers and computer hardware salaries are very comparable to engineer salaries. My recommendation would be to supplement your resume with some coding projects and find a way to build on your already impressive foundation. I, personally, plan to gain engineering and finance knowledge to get into quant and machine learning. Engineers will always be in demand and I have so much respect for what you guys do.

I know I'm not getting CS money $150k-$200k but I would be thrilled right now to get 100k, hell I'd even settle for $84k cus at least if I negotiate a 20% raise I'll get to $100k on my next job. But more likely I'll get 60k or i'm dreading 40k. I'm seriously wondering if I chose the right degree given that I couldn't overcome my fear of rejection and apply to internships. I will have projects, leadership experience, leadership on an engineering project as the treasurer for rocketry club when our budget was ~$31k a year, and some software experience (Ansys, inventor, solidworks, Python, Matlab, the microsoft and google suites, several 3d printer slicers, and a few other niche softwares). I sold 3d prints out of my dorm too. I'll have A Masters of Engineering in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (heavy on the mechanical side for my masters), A bachelors of Mechanical Engineering, possibly a minor in physics (grade in one class still up in the air) and ~$170,000 in debt.

Let's be real, software engineer salaries are likely to decrease significantly in the future as everyone and their mom wants to become a software engineer. Too many people coming out of bootcamps, layoffs, threat of AI etc is not making the long term outlook look good for future software engineers. I think mechanical engineer salaries are likely to stay similar (in line with inflation) in the future and software engineer and mechanical engineer salaries should likely be the same so just choose what you enjoy more I guess.

As far as I know, you can opt out of anything that isn't State or Federally mandated as deduction from income. Right now, you'd probably better off taking that 401k deduction and just buying physical gold with it, storing it in something you can touch with your own hands and no middle person can steal away.
