‘Black 6′ was just one of the 30,000 Messerschmitt Bf 109’s to enter Luftwaffe service, and today it stands as one of the few examples that still flies. Over 19 years, led by Russ Snadden, a volunteer team brought this rare aircraft back to flight. This film explores and records the painstaking stages of their task, revealing the aircrafts history through WWII archive, set against a background of secret pilot training in gliders and civil aircraft.

Buchons were not 109's. They were based on the design, yes, but reengineered by Hispano Aviacion as the HA. 1112.

I really don't see why the RAF didn't think that it was appropriate for the BF109 to be flown with the BBMF! Just because it wan't on the winnning team doesn''t mean it wasn't part of the Battle of Britain! The BF109 had FAR more involvement with the Battle of Britain than the Avro Lancaster, the Douglas Dakota or the DH Chipmunk did, all of which are flown with the BBMF!

It was a terrible shame that the MOD chose the pilots, given that they chose Sir John Allison, whose terrible airmanship put it in a neighbouring field with a broken back, never to fly again.

@@Pete-tq6in He didn't click the radiator flaps open properly, which led to the engine overheating. That's all. I imagine it would be easy to do in such a noisy environment

@@oxcart4172as I said before, this was far from his first mistake and not the first time he wrecked an aeroplane. It wasn’t just his initial mistake of failing to ensure that the radiator was in auto correctly, it was his botched handling of the resulting (non) emergency, his circuit planning was ridiculous and ham-fisted, this accident was a litany of problems, all stemming from poor airmanship.

It's remarkable that the BBMF was not allowed to have Black 6 on their roll as it was an enemy fighter given its objectives, but why shouldn't have been given that opportunity. The RAF did however press into service a captured Argentinian Chinook with an RAF serial so perhaps an exception should have been made accepting there are still missing types such the Mosquito from the Flight.

I was at Duxford the day Black 6 came in to land, and flipped over on landing.it was in the only complete 109 with original engine at the time, not Buchons with inverted Merlins, so to see the original aircraft and hear the real sound of a Messerschmit black 6, back then was the only way. I love the Spitfire and the sound of a Merlin, or griffon, like any true Brit. But it's not the sound of a 109, that growl of a Mercedes-Benz is its own special sound. When the 109 flipped there was a unified gasp from the crowd. Obviously, the pilot couldn't slide the canopy back as they opened up and across, a design flaw in this situation, not altered till the Czechs and Israelies sorted it out. So the Duxford pilot agreed to stay put, inverted, until they could get him free, without damaging this only genuine flying 109, as long as there was no petrol leaks. Unfortunately, it was deamed not worth repair and had its flying permit removed. Considering the quality of virtual skeletons that are returned to flying conditions i find the decision rather..... questionable. By the way, what happened to the Focke Wulf 189 they were supposed to return to airworthiness about 15 + years ago. They even sold Bronze, Silver and gold certificates so for the Gold you'd get to go up in the 189 for a 20 minute flight. A Czech model company, where the 189 was found, even did a kit with the decal sheet the same as 189. It had a white wash pattern camouflage as it was on the Eastern Front during the winter. I have a soft spot for this plane and my sister was going to get a flight for me , there's hardly any Luftwaffe ww2 planes you can get a flight in. My dream would be the JU 88 R which was in IWM Hendon, but all these have been spread around Duxford, St Albans wherever. Same with the IWM in London. I want to see a Tank, not the cheap wooden table and chair from Saddam Hussain Trial, looked like it came fro Ikea. I presume the tanks went to the Bovington Tank Museum, which makes sense. I believe black 6 which was in Hendon around 2000, is now in St Albans or Duxford. I know theres a Buchon G6 retrofitted with a Daimler Benz i believe, and an earlier model E flying. But seeing these wonderful machines sat immobile in a museum is great, but nothing like the real thing roaring through the air.

Buchons have an upright Merlin as in a Spitfire whereas the DB 601 is essentially inverted from our perspective which is why Buchons never look right - Propellor and exhausts too high. They should have inverted the Merlin but it was never designed to work upside down.

Absolutely gorgeous aircraft! The thing that I find crazy is when they find a wreck, totally corroded to oblivion, and claim to 'restore' it.......They AREN'T restoring it at all! They are building a TOTALLY new plane, that just happens to have the factory identification plate of the wreck attached (Similar to a VIN plate). Nice to have another example of the type flying, but it's a replica not a restoration! Not yet seen this vid, but I'm hoping that this one is a genuine restoration! Great that it's kept the original engine, instead of cheating and putting a Merlin in it!

Red tape by the mile is all I can see , that's a pity really . Why do men climb mountains ! because they are there . The restoration of a war plane fits into that category . I see no harm in it I know for a start that it takes money , skill & everything else to complete the project . Time well spent in my option , so get on with it . Bloody pen pushers with small minds . It defeats me in my old age now did we get this far without the destruction of the world , mind you we have had a pretty good to at it up till now . May be the next war we can achieve it . God help us , no son else is listening . Congratulations to all who helped to restore Black six a remarkable achievement in spite of all the hills you had to climb to complete your project .
