This video outlines the effects of work hardening in metals. During cold forming processes, metals undergo plastic deformation, but this plastic deformation causes dislocations and a disruption of the crystalline structure. As a result, the material becomes harder and stronger.
The heat treatment process known of annealing can be used to restore the properties of the material and undo the effects of work hardening.
