I lived in northern California during the 70's and 80's a teen and twenty something. I first saw the tunnel motors crossing the causeway between Davis and Sacramento. The SD40T-2 has always been a favorite of mine.

Southern Pacific and Cotton Belt both owned SD45T-2's alongside the SD40T-2's as mentioned. The 20-645E7's in the SD45T-2's versus the 16-645E3's in the SD40T-2's always broke crankshafts. The same problem existed on the SD45's,SD45-2's,FP45's/F45's,SDP45's,and SD45M's. This is why both railroads were rebuilding the units as SD45T-2R's just like the SD45's that became SD45R's with 16-645E3's. After the merge most of the rebuilt tunnel motors were redesignated as SD40T-2's on Union Pacific's roster. In 2008 during the economy crash Union Pacific sold large fleets of the SD45T-2R's among other units but certain SD40T-2's were also involved. The two largest aquires of tunnel motors post merge were KCS and DMIR. The tunnel motors actually remain in class one usage under Canadian National with DMIR reporting marks and most of the units have been rebuilt as SD40T-3's.
