Another problem was blade erosion. This was manageable on the heavy fuel oil units (but unacceptable on their experimental coal-fired gas turbine electric unit built on the running gear of a former Great Northern W-1), but when they came due for rebuilding, the increased price of Bunker C (now Number 6 heavy fuel oil) made management decide against keeping these locomotives.

Starting tractive effort on the b-b-b-b 4500 hp turbines had 137,000 lbs tractive force . The 8500 hp had 212,000 lbs starting tractive effort.

I’m not sure. But given how hot the exhaust can be, it is a fitting nickname. Surprised I didn’t see it in my research
