In Britain we had Archie McPherson in Scotland and Gerald Sinstadt in England who had very long commentary careers.

The commentary sounded like long wave radio from somewhere in Timbuktu ( in those days ), but it added to the excitement and the idea it's a big, mysterious and exotic world.

This concept was the same up to 1976 ... the winner of the group reached "The Finals" although part of "The Finals" was a Home and Away two legged match with another group winner ... (England were Humiliated at Wembley by West Germany 1-3 and 0-0 in 1972). After is was known who won those two legged quarter final matches, it was decided by them who would host the semi-finals, Final and 3rd place play off matches. As from 1980 you automatically progressed to "The hosted Finals" after qualifying through the group matches .

Yep, in 1970 England were Germany’s equal, but two years later they were way too strong for them. A great Germany side, at its peak.

technically not the road to Belgium as the host nation was only selected from among the four semi finallists

The names of the Greek players more of a challenge for commentators than their players were for the opposition.

England didn't qualify for the finals, they qualified to get pumped by Germany over 2 legs

The first of those, in Wembley, was Netzer's match. They had the languid skillful "Von Karajan" running the midfield; England had Ball, Bell and Peters running around like headless chickens. And up front West Germany had "Der Bomber" Gerd Muller at the height of his powers whereas England had the ponderous Chivers, the chubby Francis Lee and the aging Geoff Hurst. Muller's goal to seal West Germany's victory was, in the words of the German commentary (full match available elsewhere on KZbin) "..ein typische Muller Tor" (a typical Muller goal). Receiving the ball with his back to goal close to the centre of the D he trapped turned and shot into the corner in a single movement. Like the Dutch goalkeeper in the World Cup final two years later, Gordon Banks was befuddled not so much by the power and placing of the shot as by the fact that Muller managed to make it in the first place! A legend. Incidentally only three of the 12 players who appeared on the pitch for England that day are still alive at the time of writing; the aforementioned Geoff Hurst and Martin Chivers and the substitute Rodney Marsh. On the other hand only four of the German team have passed on as of now: Hottges, Beckenbauer, Grabowski and Muller. Must be something in the sausages!
