Part one of the second episode of Three Lions, broadcast shortly before Euro 2000 and tracing England's history since the 1966 World Cup. This section focuses on the late 1970s and early 1980s and in particular Kevin Keegan. England failed again to qualify for the 1978 World Cup but just qualified for the finals in Spain four years later.

This bit of the documentary is out of sequence. The Hungary away game was played in June '81 *before* we were embarrassed in Norway in September. We played Hungary at Wembley in November and won 1-0 which was enough to qualify thanks to other results helping us.

I agree with Tim: in many ways the 1970s teams had the most talented players of the decade. I felt that the inidviduals in the 1970s outshone those of 1966 and 1968: yet it was those teams that achieved more!

In 1968 England won 3rd place in what was then the Nations cup now the Euros having been beaten 1-0 by Yougoslavia in the semi final.

In that semi-final, Alan Mullery was the first England player to be "Sent Off" Yugoslavia scored in the dying seconds, so we played the USSR and beat them 2 - 0

In those days (up to 1976) the finals was the Semi - Finals, the Final and the third place play off

I forgot to say that in 1968, it was played in Italy ... then (up to 1976) the finals was chosen between the last four Nations from the qualifying groups.

In fact the goal Keegan scores on 1.54 is one of the goals in England 2 Italy 0 (Nov 1977) which was a year later than the highlighted Italy 2 England 0

This is generally a great documentary but "They needed at least a draw in Italy to reach the Word Cup in 1978" (3.19) is inaccurate - see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1978_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_(UEFA) - England played away in Italy early in the campaign (the match highlighted) and later played Italy at Wembley when England won 2-0, Both England and Italy won all their matches apart from these two matches and Italy qualified on goal difference (getting better scores against the other teams in the group)

All those great players we had in the 70's and we couldn't qualify for the 2 world cups held in that decade. Just goes to show you can have all the great players but if you can't make a team with them you aren't going to win anything

There is the theory that Revie quit England when he did because he feared being outed for match fixing while at Leeds so couldn't wait to get out of the country.

@@dlamiss And yet there are numerous stories of corruption in football but there never seems a great deal of interest in investigating them. Revie aside there is the case of Argentina bribing Peru to throw a game on the way to winning the World Cup in '78, Leeds being robbed of winning the European Cup by a dodgy ref, Nottingham Forest being robbed by PSV bribing a ref, Liverpool and Derby falling foul of ref bribing and so on.

@@Kaiserbill99 "Corruption" in football was and is rife. I used to live opposite a guy whos lad played for a 4th division team in the late 80s early 90s. He signed for a top first division team but never made the grade and ended up back in the 4th tier via playing in Scotland but when he signed for the first division side this lads dad got a bung as did the lower leagues manager and chairman

To think people today bang on about there being too many foreign players in England and it affecting the National team, we’ll here you have it, next to no foreign players in the 70s and England were utter shite.
