It's ok for Messi strutting his stuff in sunny Spain in beautiful Barcelona in front of an adoring crowd, but could he do it on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke when the wind is driving the rain in sideways?

I have been to the Weatherspoons in Leeds Station. I drove to Withernsea earlier this year to run their Parkrun, it is one of the most remote places in England. I went to University in Sunderland and saw Billy Graham at Roker Park (former Sunderland Ground). I also did a parkrun in Ipswich this year.

The castle at Withernsea used to be the entrance to the pier. The pier was damaged in 1893 due to storms and ships and was finally dismantled in 1903.

Must admit that it's got to be easier for us 'locals' - 1st, I used to go trainspotting there as a kid. 2nd, used to go fishing near there. 3rd, used to go fishing there, too (wonder if Teddy's Club still exists?). 4th, fished there, too (Roker Pier). 5th, various references on signs etc to 'Orwell', it's not George, it's the river, and I know where that is because I've fished near there, as well. None of them actually local to me, but, y'know.

Round 1: Leeds station, I know exactly where that is. Unfortunately I dropped a point by getting the wrong entrance to the station. Round 2: This doesn't feel like a town centre. The church just down the road tells use we're in Titensor, which I've never heard of. Nothing much is happening this way so I try heading north instead and find a helpful road sign which puts us near Newcastle-under-Lyme. Zooming in there I see the Trentham Estate which is marked on the sign, so I find where we are. 20 yards away though - just scraped the 5k I expect. Round 3: Helpful signs tell use we're in Withernsea, I've very vaguely heard of it but can't place it on a map (is it Essex/Suffolk area?). I find the high street and the Army Cadet Force building is extremely helpful in telling use we're in South Yorkshire or Humberside (not Essex or Sussex). South Yorkshire is landlocked so I head to the Humber estuary and quickly find Withernsea on the map. The garden paths aren't marked on Google so I was very lucky to get only 4 yards away. Round 4: A fairly generic low-rent shopping street, but all the shops have 0191 phone numbers which means we're in the Tyneside area, I don't think it's Newcastle though and with a large Debenhams in the distance it's probably not a suburban centre - could this be Sunderland? The station at the end of the road tells me it is. 9 yards away but the pin is definitely too far east. Round 5: Now this is truly a generic and dying high street :( "Keep Ipswich Clean with Digby" tells us everything we need to know to find it though. 4 yards. Overall 198 yards in 14 minutes. Only 24.999 thanks to that stupid mistake in Leeds. I'm not pleased about that!

Stoke’s ground is also quite exposed on top of a hill - though I guess the phrase predates the move there - the old ground was nearer the centre.

Idk for sure but I think the “cold, rainy night in Stoke” comes from the fact that Stoke used to play a very solid defensive style of football that was hard to break down, and they were well known for it. Then the “cold and rainy night” bit is just emphasising the difficulty of the game. As an aside, the turn around must been insane if you’ve watch Man U vs Bournemouth and already got the video out a few hours later.

Exactly mate. They used to keep the grass long to stop the passing game and with the stands having no corners the wind blowing through was horrendous. I've been about 5 times supporting newcastle. Only seen us win once 😂👍

I do a video and lock in/focus to get it uploaded. I don't have much time typically with work, family, coaching football, etc - and why I'm responded late to this... haha.

The ongoing darts world championships is probably the thing that people would be betting on at the moment, that or the traditional boxing day football.

Worth looking up a goal scored by Begovic for stoke at home against Southampton to see ‘cold windy night in stoke’ in action
@alloverthemap238 күн бұрын
haha - yes. Kind of like the one the American keeper Tim Howard scored for Everton....now the real question, if Begovic does this from a goal kick and it flies back into his own goal- what is the call? lol

The ever present 'High Street' in UK towns comes from when the main shopping streets were originally built on the highest part of land in the area to avoid the stores getting flooded. A lot of town are built around rivers or brooks etc so they needed to keep the produce dry at all times, even in the event of a flood.

The medieval looking house that you mentioned in the second round looks as though it could be a former inn. That road has been a major route for moving goods between the South Coast and the Midlands for generations, and the inns were there to serve the carters and coachmen in the days of horse-drawn transport.

The first one really shows how out of date some of the street views are. Outside of Leeds station has been a building site at least a year now, incredibly inconvenient to get into the station if you're not sure exactly where to go for the alternate entrances.

Yay I got full points it took me 26minutes though haha.. and as soon as I got to the Sunderland round I knew I’d been on that street before, before going to see shows at the theatre

The Tittensor round was a bit unfair because it looks like it is part of Stoke-on-Trent which is polycentric i.e. it is made up of six towns and doesn't have a defined centre. It is the only city in the UK like this that I know of.
