India in 1974 were already in decline from 1971 but their defeat came as such a shock because their decline had not been exposed until then due to the relative scarcity of Test series in those days. This often happens to once successful teams. The weather that early summer was totally unsuited to India's spin attack.

We didn’t have any fast bowler. We were dependent on spinners. Madan Lal came as new player. He was not having experience to swing the ball. But Wadekar should have given more chance to Madan lal because he was very much talented. Abid Ali was the only medium pace bowler. We didn’t develop pace bowlers as now therefore it was very difficult to win specially in England or Australia.
