Defrietas-Gough partnership, Malcolm's bowling, Atherton, Gooch and Hick scoring 100 of 204 target in first 12 overs - this was England playing Bazball 30 years before Bazball was a thing.

I have the pleasure of having met Devon a few times at corporate/charity events. A very pleasant chap, who will offer a friendly smile to anyone who mentions this day - his car numberplate refers to the event. His sons bowling action is exactly the same, although Devon never coached him and he has never watched his dad on film.

Devon Malcolm's classic 9/57 from the BBC days before Channel 4 and BSkyB - no ads pure cricket for licence holders

"I think Devon means business." Classic Gower-esque understatement 😄

As Steve Waugh said he was happy every time Devon was not picked for England because has a good bowler who could turn a game, another England player badly treated by poor England management

Illingworth was heavy handed in South Africa with him, but I've some sympathy with the management. Unless pitch was fast, Malcolm as one of four bowlers was unreliable. If they'd had an all-rounder at 6, then no problem. But we usually didn't. Central contracts would have helped Devon a lot. Plus there's nowadays much more sense of a squad where not everyone plays every game. But he should have been a fixture in Aus, WI and SA, plus at the Oval and Old Trafford.

Devon could blow hot and cold in a single session. His captains just couldn't rely on him. When he was off form he was wayward and just too expensive. But when he was on form he was capable of blasting any batsman in the world out. His Test bowling average of over 37 runs per wicket though isn't great.

You can add Hick, Ramps and the list goes on and on!

@@marze72 Ramprakash may have had the talent but didn't have the temperament for Test cricket. An average of just 27 in 50 odd games is simply poor.

@@Prodigy_Fan Spot on. Ramps was total failure at the highest level.

I was there that day and after Malcolm took Cronje wicket , myself and four mates all threw a quid in and I went to the Ladbrokes shop behind the Vauxhall stand and tried to put on a £5 bet that Malcolm would take all ten. The bookie refused to take the bet. I also remember that De Villiers who had hit Malcolm on the head never faced him - he turned down an easy single and Rhodes was out a couple of balls later.

When he got it right he was like Andy Roberts. When he didn't he was more like Alf Roberts! 😂

gooch changes his bat and his form disappears. never did like the revised model that he used after trent bridge. i wonder if the change affected his play? can never know. i preferred his previous 333 model, he was at one with that imo.
