This was so impressive from the Germans. Their takers were under incredible pressure with each kick, with England planting the first five and the Wembley crowd against them. They were as cool as cucumbers.

Living and working in Germany, it's easy to see why they are one of the top teams in the world. So many more youngsters playing the game then in the uk means a large talent pool. Most of the Premiere league are foreign players. That *96 game was a classic. I don't think England will come so close again as then. Deutschland - 4 times world cup winners! Respect.

Ich bin Gascoigne, haha! This was the only time I felt really bad about England loosing a match. English press always expects too much from the overrated team, but on this occasion England had truly great team, basically 2 great players on every position and legends Like Shearer, Sheringham, Platt, Psycho and Gazza, old breed of die-hard English players who also had killer skill and great character. Also, if England won, Wembley would've probably become a world heritage site. Even as a Croat, I really miss the old Wembley.

Not that bothered about England, but they were so unlucky at this tournament. This was their moment. I remember this game, and even though i m not English or German i wanted England to win so badly. This is a game England should have won, but you can't underestimate German tenacity. The passion the intensity these two teams bring when they play each other is just phenomenal.

I lived in London at the time working out of Slough. My British colleagues thought it a good idea taking me - a German - to a pub in Slough to watch the game. Understandably, I had my reservations but went along. There I was, a single German fan in a rough pub in Slough amongst a lively British crowd. I never celebrated a win so discreetly ever again. I am almost certain that no one in the room even noticed that I was celebrating.

I am german, and I admit I miss those times when England *really* had a team (the WC teams of 1986, 1990 and also 1996 EC were very strong in my opinion). But to be very honest - I am sure the young players you got now *could* be a strong team in 2 or 4 years, if you get a decent coach. I doubt the current coach is good enough.

The thing is, even when England had a good team (like here) they couldn't win anything because they were always losing penalty shootouts, even if England ever become a decent team again (which I doubt at the moment), they'll still be rubbish at penalty shootouts.

Juca XPTO People always just talk about the 3:2 but infact the 4:2 was irregular, as well. People were running around and on the pitch already. From today's perspective irregular circumstances. But the Germans don't really care anymore - they've gone further than England in EVERY World Cup since then and even EVERY major tournement (World Cup and European Cup) except for the 2004 Euros.

Found this when the Fox network American announcer brought it up during the Croatia-England WC 2018 semifinal. Sad to see Southgate miss his penalty here...but he showed class as England manager this afternoon as England was knocked out of the Cup. Soccer...can be very cruel. An Italy fan.

bloody heck, 20 years ago? I remember it well, at 18 years of age at the time, Southgate was devastated for ages after he missed that penalty. Surly this has bought back memories not only for the outcome, the past England players, e.g. David Platt, Gazza
