it wont make any difference. gordon played lw against iceland with foden in the 10 and we couldnt create any chances then. the tactics suck. change the formation, change the players, it wont change anything if we keep playing southgates awful slow boring sofe negative pedestrian reactionary tactics. southgate is just so tactically bad. its painful.

Yeh the clean sheet is massive, probably the only thing stopping me losing hope for Southgate, I would love to see mainoo or Wharton to get subbed on earlier to control the game, they might be young but they are mature players and don't mess about, haven't seen any bad decisions yet from them so I'd love to see them get that chance to Impress next game, I'm confident they will excel in this team

Everyone sucking off Foden ahead of the Euros and then he stinks the place out just as he normally does for England. Here's an interesting little thought experiment. List all the truly elite players you can think of and then think of how many times you've had to hear: ''he's not playing in his proper position'' in regards to defending those players. I can't think of many personally. My point is this: if you want to be an elite player, one of the best of the best then you *make your place in the team, you own your spot because you are undroppable.* Nobody ''makes space for you'' in their line up because you are already the first name on the team sheet. Nobody has to cry like a baby to defend other superstar level players throughout history for ''not playing in their proper positions'' because those players are of a quality that demands that they start with no questions asked. Is Foden a very good player? Yes. But he's also a luxury player. He's the cherry on top but he's not what makes the dessert great to begin with, imo.

People think Guardiola just plays a bunch of expensive players, but it's not so simple. He has made Foden player of the season because he found a way to make him extremely effective. Southgate has to change the tactical setup drastically or drop Foden and perhaps Kane for Watkins as well, if we're going to play this deep.

Saka has to stay on the right. I don't think he could do that good of a job on the left. The key thing that makes Saka great is he is equally good at going on the outside, inside or holding the ball up. He is as good in all three aspects. You lose that by putting him on the left.

Foden didn't have his best game on the final third, but rewatch he first 15mins of the second half. Trent was lost when Serbia were pressing, and Foden was the one dropping in, showing for the ball and playing through the press. The answer is Foden at 10, Bellingham 8, Rice 6 and Trent on the bench.

And you get murdered because Jude isn’t defensive in any sense, or in the best case Jude is completely ineffective and ends up being the new problem. Effectively you end up playing an 8 and two 10s in midfield.

I don't blame them for not knowing, especially Spencer as he's busy with Hashtag, but I assure you, Gordon gives more width than you'll realise. Gordon purposely adapted his game last season from being a cut in 'merchant' to taking it wide and crossing with his left (which is half decent). And even when he does cut in, he does so dangerously and earned us (newcastle) about 6 or so penalties. due to trippier and having no proper left back, I'd start Gordon just for his width, I think having Foden to come on for either Saka or Jude adds a threat to our bench as well that we don't really have currently and would allow Foden to play in his preferred position and show what he can do in the last 20-30 minutes of a game.

Foden needs to go on the bench. There isn’t more to discuss. Foden isn’t better than Bellingham and it’s that simple. Don’t start moving consistent TOP PLAYERS to try and make things work for Foden. It’s about the team and England. If it doesn’t work with Foden LW, you’re on the bench. It’s that simple. Don’t move Saka for anything. He stretches the pitch and is such a 1v1 threat due to his stronger foot being his left. Putting him LW to soley help Phil is crazy. So what happens if Foden does well and Saka doesn’t? It’s silly.

Something's got to change on the left. We need width whether it's from Gordon, Eze or in my view, Saka. Foden and Trippier will both always naturally drift inside. The other option is 4-3-3: Gordon - Kane - Saka Jude - Rice - Trent

Why is the discussion so much about Foden? Kane had TWO TOUCHES in a half that we mostly dominated, why bring two back up strikers if you have no plans on playing them. Game was screaming for Gordan and Watkins.

He doesn't have anyforward movement to the point where Maino was closing down the keeper and kane was sitting in CM. second half was dog shit becuase he didnt keep the serbian defence up the pitch and it just allowed them to keep england stuck in one half.

I'm an arsenal fan, but I dont mind kane, keeping up the pitch and not touching the ball, allows saka and jude to progress the ball without him contesting the middle of the pitch, when he drops deep.

@@theimmaculated6480if you were to take that one step further, I’d argue foden wasn’t nearly as bad as people say when you consider Harry Kane’s lack of really anything helpful narrows the space in midfield forcing foden and bellingham to be arguably impeding each others space, in terms of creativity it wasn’t like bellingham was creating in the attacking third and foden wasn’t, no one was at all as it’s because of kane’s lack of movement/involvement. The solution in my opinion to getting the best out of foden and the creativity in this squad is trying foden as a false nine and Palmer or Gordon in the left, the fluidity and movement in the front four like that would really allow for the freedom these players thrive in to be creative.

Spain will go further in my opinion. Reasoning, I don’t see Italy coming back from being down a goal against a top team. Spain have a bit more fire power to equalize vs France, Holland, England, Germany. I know, I know, Italy just came back from down 1-0 in their opener…. I don’t see them doing that vs many other sides in this tournament, especially the favorites

The opening conversation is basically what’s been wrong with England for ages “Player X is really good so how can we fit him Into the system” It’s literally Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard. You don’t need all 3 and instead we forced Paul Scholes to play in a position he wasn’t comfortable just to get him in. There were games when it should have been Scholes, Gerrard or Lampard but not all 3, but we are all way too tribal. We go “you have to play them” Now you have Foden on that left wing, he hates it there and he’s not effective but we don’t want to play him in the 10 to accommodate someone else. So we shoe horn him in because he’s good. Now we’re saying “what if we moved Saka” so move a player who’s good and effective to a different position to help a player you’re already playing out of position? Just play Gordon. This is also the argument for bringing Rashford, has he had a good season? Not really, is he better than Foden? No, is he better than Gordon? On average I’d say yes but not last season BUT what he does offer you is something on that left side that the other 2 don’t. That’s the problem, we have a system and we shoe horn people in. See also Trent playing on the midfield, yes he did well but it’s a big risk. Creating an effective squad means playing some players who “don’t deserve it” and maybe dropping some who do. To fit a system, to play a certain way instead of this bizarre thing we do where we try and keep everyone happy

Play Gordon for Tripper and put Trent left back and invert him. If they invert both the fullbacks with Rice in the middle. That leaves Bellingham and Foden in the number 10 roles

A 3 at the back would actually suit this team very well, a more tactical manager easily implements it 😂 I don’t think Foden in the 10 is the answer, he should only play as a false 9 imo, provides a different option to Kane, Watkins and Toney. I’d also heavily consider it since Kane was fairly ineffective yesterday. Only thing with that is Gordon is your only left winger…

The reason why you don't play Foden wide is fundamental, just look at his tendencies, a winger is supposed to provide WIDTH, because the dimensions of a pitch and most teams' defensive formations necessitate that you stretch the defense so that you can create gaps & space to exploit. Foden does not provide width at all, so stop playing him out wide, and if there's no room for him centrally it means he's not better than the central player(s), therefore he's on the bench. Don't know why we keep trying to shoehorn him in

I'm surprised no one has mentioned how playing Foden LW denied us the second goal. His tendency to drift inside and into Kane's space, is perfectly summed up when Walker crosses it and he literally bumps into Kane. A proper LW and that would of been a goal as they'd likely been by the far post. 2-nil and we'd be talking about a completely different game.

I’m not hearing people discuss this enough but Harry Kane is obviously brilliant and our first choice blah blah, but his non pressing or running at all at those Serbian defenders during the second half was what caused some of those balls and crosses getting into the box! Southgate should have subbed Watkins on with 25 mins to go to cause those defenders to have no time on the ball!

Foden and Bellingham both played the 10 all season. One done it in the prem and turned up in the champions league the other played in la liga and played poor in the champions league. Foden deserves to play the 10

Its 3 points but england must learn their lesson. Remember 2018 world cup and 2020 euro. Leading by 1-0 and playing defensive and guarding one goal will allow opponents attacking opportunities and come knocking your doors again and again. They end up losing and breaking million of hearts. No one want that to happen again with so much talent in the squad. Look at Romania. They lead by 1-0 but kept attacking. They lead by 3-0 and played defensive. Leading by a single goal is very dangerously giving your opponents opportunity to come back. England have so much talent and what it takes to win trophies. That is why fans are shouting for intensive ,exciting attacking football .

If you play like that Bellingham’s whole abilities are just neglected then you won’t get the goals literally the reason why England won is bcoz Bellingham was there playing in the middle and he has shown that he should be played as a 10 coz then even when harry Kane has a bad game as yesterday he shifts up to cm allows Bellingham to go forward and get goals also foden played as 10 against Iceland and England created no chances

If we are basing England & Italy on first games alone. England won 1-0, clean sheet. Italy won 2-1 against Albania. Italy have some good players, and were underrated coming into this tournament. To be worried about Italy after one game for both sides is crazy.

Foden cannot start if Jude is playing the 10 and if Saka is starting. Drop him. Foden has received much too many chances now to not warrant him being benched for a few games to allow others who compliment the team to play

The reason he can do that is because Rodri can run the midfield on his own. Rice cannot do that role and so Bellingham has to drop further back or you play Gallagher with him

Interesting idea, but Foden isn’t as good as Bellingham getting into the box and if you play Bellingham in a more defensive position you will miss his goals. It is a hard question.

@@dannyesse3043 Agreed however, the reason he can do so well for Madrid is because he has Camavinga, Kroos, Tchouaméni, Valverde all behind him doing the defensive work. He doesn't have that luxury for England and so must be more disciplined in the defensive phase. Thats unless you play Gallagher and Rice double pivot and Bellingham with Saka/Foden number 10's

Double jeopardy is if you make a genuine attempt to play the ball and commit a foul in the box as last man you don’t get sent off. But if you just hand ball it off the line then that’s obviously not double jeopardy
