My bulldog is a rescue. I have no idea what is background is, but he has had an ear pretty much torn off and stitched back on, and his lower canines have had the tips filed off. He is about 3 years old. He has good manners, on the whole, but I would like to teach him to heel. He doesn't like most treats; his favourite thing is spam, which is not a convenient snack to carry in my pocket. Most of the time, he walks fairly well in heel position, except when we are on our way to the puppy park (I live in an apartment), in which case, he's a man on a mission. He is very aware that he's supposed to get there before he does his business. On the way home, he's very polite. He will sometimes sit on command, but we haven't tried Stay yet, and he also jumps up on people when he's excited. He usually wants to go out the door first, and I've been told that I should insist I go first, so I think we need a solid Heel before that will happen consistently. I've only had him for a month (I'm a foster failure), and, at 74, I'm more stubborn than he is. Any advice you can give about working with him is much appreciated. I live in Texas, so it crossed my mind that he might understand Spanish, but "Sit" gets about the same results as "Sientete," which is the same in Spanish. IOW, both words work, sometimes. He does not seem to recognize the hand signal. Also, it's like 105 F devery single day, and maybe 85 at night, so we are not getting a lot of exercise. I do throw the squeaky things around the apartment, and he fetches well, even giving the toys up for another throw.

This is great! I was thinking today that I wish u had a bulldog show and then I found it! My bulldog is a year old, and he walks ok most of the time, but only when there is no one around... like 5am or 7pm...I use a harness. I’m going to try this and eventually take him to more distracting spaces. My question is, what kind of collar or harness would you recommend for these types of dogs on a heel? Is a harness ok? He chokes himself on a regular collar, so he doesn’t do well on that at all.

Thanks for watching Jay, glad you found it helpful! It's traditionally the side dogs are walked on for competing. It's totally up to you if you choose to walk them on your left or right, it's just important to keep it consistent 😊
