Hi again Hylt. The DP1 really was the "King of Diesels". I understand why they were never a serious proposition for the WCML, but the decision by the Midland Region to opt for the Peaks instead is a little weird. The model is very impressive. Bachmann consistently offer top quality diesels, but at a top dollar price. Hopefully, Accurascale will keep the pressure on. I very much like your new incline: sweeping curve gradients are very prototypical. One point to think about: almost all RTR locos these days are designed to negotiate 2nd radius curves, and their manufacturers certify that they will. So, in order to test new locos thoroughly, it may be a good idea to have at least 1 2nd radius section. As for coach configurations, the main point is to have a brake coach at the rear, and another next to the loco (if you have two). Multiple brake coaches can be added to either end, and this would be prototypical. Having said that, it wasn't unknown for 1 or 2 non-brakes to be added to the ends of rakes during times of high demand. Also, trains that were split during mid-journey would carry a brake coach or two at the point where they would be separated. Fellow KZbinr Yarslow has a very informative video on the subject. Stay safe & see you soon in YT-land!

Hello Stephen ☺️ Indeed a truly magnificent machine, what a treat it must have been to see it thump around back in its testing days. As you say though, top price, I see a few comments about the pricing being right and perhaps I’m a bit too critical? But my thinking is purely based on the age of the tooling. That’s a good thought about the R2 curves, I may need to find a spot to test them in, though, this layout will be a lot less ‘rail-heavy’ so not sure where I might fit it in. Thanks for your guidance on the formations, I’ll try bear it in mind on the next run 😊 Keep well sir

Very thorough history and review and you through in some good advice on waiting. I'm afraid I'm a bit tainted when it comes to Bachmann due to the many years of prior experience with sketchy mechanicals. Also, Bachmann parts in the states are not readily available if at all and that is a kick in the pants. Your presentation in this video was stellar it must have been a lot of work. Great video, Jersey Bill

Fantastic looking loco mate! I definitely prefer the British class 55, especially in br green, but this is a beautiful loco nonetheless! I think the hornby one will be great and it's pretty much all metal, But at over 300 quid, I'd stick with the Bachmann one tbh! Great stuff hlyt

Thanks Jack, I am very fond of the 55 too, it's a real looker and definitely on my radar. I suppose at 300 pounds sound fitted the Bachmann version is the cheaper of the two, but there is that tasty temptation of a full metal bodied version with Dublo... decisions, decisions...

Nice job, Hylt, lovely model. DP1 visited the Ribble Steam Railway a few years ago, I often wondered whether it arrived by lorry or by rail - if the latter it must've been special seeing it cross their dock bridge. By the way, are you planning a bit of superelevation for those curves, particularly the chicane? Looked a bit precarious a couple of times - I'd hate to see any locos taking a dive! 😳 Anyway nice to see you back and making progress 👍
@Proper_ChuffedАй бұрын
Howdy Jamfjord, I wonder how mobile it is now, wouldn't it be great to see it running again?! Yes, don't worry, that chicane is going to be level ground, but it's actually so stable already, despite looking very precarious! Keep well, and thanks for popping by friend.

This is a lovely looking loco! Regarding the packaging I actually don’t think it needs upgrading! I’ve never had anything from Bachmann arrive damaged, so I figure the packaging is probably doing it’s job!!
@Proper_ChuffedАй бұрын
Hey there, thanks for watching, appreciate your thoughts on the packaging. My reasoning is probably a bit more selfish, given how South African post handles boxes. I think given the price of some of Bachmann's models they should though, I look at Hornby and Accurascale as prime examples of more rigid, updated packaging. They are fantastic. But I hear you.
@modelrailfan37Ай бұрын
@@Proper_Chuffed I agree with what your saying, and I live in Canada myself so for me my models also ship halfway across the world and I haven’t had any issues. I agree though that Bachmanns packaging is noticeably less protective than other brands. That being said since I live in Canada I also own some Bachmann USA models and the packaging for those is 10 times worse than the Bachmann UK packaging so I’m glad at least we don’t have that

Nice loco and thanks for your good review. I recently purchased a DP1 with Sound from Locomotion Models. It has a tad darker blue and also darker grey roof than this one. It says it is a preserved condition Deltic. Fortunately I was exempt from £50 VAT in Australia ! At one end my traindoctor has attached a red strike plate and bufferbeam details leaving the NEM coupling untouched at the other end. It runs and sounds all right but as I don't have a layout I hardly can run it. My traindoctor gave the green light anyway . Yes, I think this Deltic is worth the money ! I am waiting for the Hornby Deltic but I hope it is not too high on the bogies like on the picture ! Best Greetings, Jan, Australia

Hello Jan, thanks very much for watching, how does the sound profile sound to you? I am curious. Are you able to navigate curves with the strikeplate attached? I'm in the same boat as you, being exempt from the UK tax is great, but import fees more than make it up sadly. Keep well and thanks for sharing.
@grootsanАй бұрын
@@Proper_Chuffed hello Hylt, I was only be able to watch it on a short straight piece of track but it sounded all right to me. It has a 21 pin decoder and probably loksound. I did ask my traindoctor to test it on his layout and I haven't heard any problems from him. Before this new Deltic I had another Deltic DP1 in your blue colour from eBay that had exactly the same bufferbeam attachments with strikeplate. My traindoctor used that as an example to attach it on my new Deltic. My older Deltic that I had purchased on eBay had a few (hardly noticeable) imperfections in it's bogies and a bit warped frame. So I decided to sell it again on eBay and purchased a brandnew one from Locomotion Models a few months ago. I have run that old Deltic on the layout of a friend of mine and there were no issues with that strikeplate. Neither with the sound although I don't know what sound it had. I guess it was at least five years old. In spite of the imperfections it ran all right. Here is that video : Cheers, Jan kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGXKaHafg9ych9k

Great review and camera work. In terms of the Bachmann box whilst other manufactures have had issues with such boxes in the past (Hornby for example) I honestly can’t say I’ve ever had an issue with Bachmann with the box being crushed or parts detached. I actually prefer the size to the oversized Accurascale boxes that I personally feel are way too big. A couple of Accurascale boxes vs around 8 Bachmann boxes. Arguably part of the premium for international shipping should be for a bit of extra padding. I partially suspect the rerun is to capitalise before the Hornby Dublo release. The pricing is high but I rarely buy locomotion models from the shop and go to the stand at shows. For example got an ES1 for £125 recently. Obviously appreciate this is hard for yourself to do! PS just been to the NYMR for the steam gala and it was superb!
@Proper_ChuffedАй бұрын
Howdy! :) Glad you had a blast at the NYMR steam gala. I was with you in spirit! So my issue with the boxing is really to do with shipping security, its not bad, per se, its just that when I see how wonderfully secure the newer Hornby boxes are, I feel short changed by Bachmann's offering. Agreed with you, the Accurascale boxes are MASSIVE! Thanks for watching, Hylt.

An interesting feature about the DP1 Deltic prototype is the upper headlight on the nose, a feature not seen on the production class 55 (or any British locomotive until more recent times). I wonder if English Electric included that upper headlight because they may have had plans to send it to North America for demonstration purposes in hope of selling them there.

Hi Hilton, (sorry if I have spelt that wrong) I got very lucky getting one of these bachmann prototype deltic DP1 models recently, the one I managed to get is a weathered and detailed up one and I bought it for £180 of EBay, the model has also been weathered but what I will say about that is I’m not sure if it’s factory or a custom as bachmann did do a couple of these deltics weathered, when it comes to the price yes these do tend to be quite expansive and I did use to be put off by the second hand prices of these which is why I jumped at the chance to get one second hand for £180 which was detailed up and weathered and have to say it was a really good decision, all,I had to do was make a coupling for it which I have done using a piece of brass wire, I’m now looking at getting it sound fitted at some point. Onto the price that you paid it can initially sound like a lot for what is quite an old model now but a couple of things to bear in mind is this is a one off loco, in model form one offs tend to have a much higher price compared to more mainstream items and it’s because the manufacturer doesn’t really have many options for things like liveries on these models, DP1 also didn’t last very long with the real loco just being built as a demonstrator so it’s sphere of operation is very limited, the 2nd thing to consider is where the money is going, if you bought this from the Railway museum itself then the money being paid is actually helping to fund the museum as they receive no funding from anywhere else, they are actually very reliant on donations as far as I know, I bought my bachmann V2 Green Arrow from the York base of the railway museum and at the time I paid £230 for that model but didn’t have any problem with that because it was a loc I wanted but the main thing is I’m helping to keep the museum going. Overall a good video here, it may look like it’s expensive but you have a very nice loco here Hilton, it’s what my dad calls the only proper Deltic, my dad has actually walked through it and it’s very narrow, I haven’t got to see the real one in person yet but hopefully one day.
@Proper_ChuffedАй бұрын
Hey there! No worries on the name-happens all the time! It's Hylton, but don't stress! That sounds like a great find on your weathered DP1 Deltic, especially for £180 on eBay. Weathered models have always looked fantastic, but I get the uncertainty around whether it's factory-applied or a custom job. Either way, it sounds like you got a well-detailed model, and the added work with the coupling is a great touch! I also completely agree with your point about where the money goes when buying from the National Railway Museum. It’s easy to think of these prices as steep, but when you know you’re helping preserve such iconic history, it makes it worth it. That’s awesome that your dad walked through the real DP1! It would be amazing to see it in person. Thanks again for the kind words on the video.

Hi, great looking loco that has really grown on me over the last few years, the Bachmann model looks very nice indeed, the price is about average for such a unique piece of model railway art, the Hornby model show all the signs that it has been taken to another level but I just don’t trust what Hornby do anymore because they don’t support the customer, they tend to rush out products that clearly haven’t been fully developed and have done on numerous occasions, the fact that their all new cast loco has 4 fans make me feel very uncomfortable as the HST sets I bought had extremely noisy units that had to be disconnected because they were so bad! I like the detailing in the pictures I’ve seen but what worries me is the motor they’re going to use in the model, will it be up to the job or will a cheap problematic unit be used to power it, Hornby have a horrible knack of giving nothing for something and I refer you to the APT which was a rush out and many customers were very annoyed that the problems it had were addressed on a 3rd run because the second run was a test run that cost modellers hundreds of pounds and certain aspects of the pack were very underdeveloped on features that hampered its performance, those whom had the issue know and the forums state how bad they were, the cost of the DP1 is very high almost Bachmann high! Sound fitted models are £30 more than dcc ready, this loco should have a smoke feature for the money because of what it is. For me if Accurascale decided to produce an expensive of this great loco I would buy one in a heartbeat because it would be an ultra detailed offering because they are the best at it, if they produced a die-cast model it would cause a stampede, we all know Accurascale will fully support your purchase and I’m speaking from experience, for the collectors that this model is aimed at they will probably be happy with them but I feel the price tag will weigh heavily on what could be a all show and no go project that could show how far Hornby have fallen over the years, I wish them luck because they really need it, if Revolution Trains or Cavalex decide to produce a DP1 it would be a superb product like the ones they produce on a regular basis, only time will tell if the loco lives up to the hype, thanks for sharing.
@Proper_ChuffedАй бұрын
Hi there, thanks for sharing your thoughts! I can definitely relate to your concerns about Hornby's recent track record, especially when it comes to rushing out products without fully addressing development issues. It’s disappointing when models have unresolved flaws, and I completely understand how that can lead to hesitancy with newer releases. It does feel like there should be more than just surface-level detailing-something like a smoke feature, as you mentioned, would elevate it to the next level for that price point. I’ve seen the same sentiment on forums about Hornby’s tendency to cut corners, particularly with motors and other critical components. It’s frustrating when you invest in a model that looks fantastic but doesn’t deliver on performance. I have to agree, Accurascale really does set the benchmark for quality. If they ever ventured into producing a DP1, I can imagine it would be an absolute game-changer in terms of detail and reliability. And Revolution Trains or Cavalex would no doubt do justice to such an iconic locomotive too. It’s going to be interesting to see how the Hornby DP1 turns out and if it can live up to the hype. Here’s hoping they take their time and get everything right with this one, because it’s definitely a model that deserves the best! Thanks again for your insight-much appreciated!
