“and she was eager to gain from any one, such a confirmation of his merits as might remove the possibility of fear from Marianne” This is an Excerpt From Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. There is “as might” in the sentence. I see lots of similar instances in the book. I vaguely understand them. Can you help us explain it. Thanks.

Great explanation!!!! LOVE it! I learned a lot of new things the first use of as doesn't mean "like" in the first two examples? can we omit "as" when we make comparision and still the sentence makes sense? Brad Pitt isn't as handsome as Mark. LOL. In the way that= like?
@learnenglishwithmark7 жыл бұрын
Hi Rosa! Yes, "like" can be used to mean "in the form of". It doesn't make sense when talking about someone or something's role. Ie = Jim works for the government like an accountant = strange When making comparisons, do not omit either "as". If you omit them, it does not have the same meaning. Brad Pitt isn't as handsome as Mark = Mark is more handsome than Brad Pitt, who is also handsome. Brad Pitt isn't handsome like Mark = Mark is handsome. Brad Pitt is not handsome.
