Learn the difference between the modal verbs 'MUST' and 'HAVE TO'* to talk about obligation. Can you complete these sentences using 'must' and 'have to'? ⬇️
*'have to' is actually considered a semi-modal because although it is not a full modal verb, is performs a similar function.
1) My Spanish isn’t as good as I would like it to be. I …. study more.
2) The local school children …. wear a uniform to school.
3) You … buy a ticket before you get on the train.
4) I … buy a new laptop. My current one is really slow.

Professor, would you explain the use of the modal verb "ought to" as an obligation, I have seen this verb to be used with this meaning so well and some teachers say that it gives more obligation sense, is that certain?

@@robsonsales4581 There is a lot more to 'must' and 'have to' than can be covered in a short video. 'Must' often appears in legal English. However, the focus of the video is on talking about our own obligations. When we talk about our obligations, 'have to' is stronger because it comes from an external source. Compare: Police officer: You must wear your seatbelt. Driver: I have to wear my seatbelt. Teacher: You must do your homework. Student: I have to do my homework.

Yes, must can be used for rules and laws, but the difference is that it is the enforcer of the rule that says it. Sign/Police officer: Passengers must fasten their seat belts. Passengers: We have to fasten our seat belts. I would say 'We have to stop at the red light', but a rule book might say, 'You must stop at the red light'. 'Mustn't' is different. It refers to prohibition. It is more accurate to think of it as the opposite of 'have to' than the opposite of 'must'. I have a short video on 'mustn't' and 'don't have to' if you're interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5WsZIRqh91opLM

must as a personal obligation is the second aspect, the first and the most important is the law
@EnglishWithEm
@EnglishWithEm 2 ай бұрын
There's a lot more to 'must' and 'have to' than can be covered in a short video. At some point, I'll do a longer one on the topic. The focus of this video is on how we use them to talk about our obligations and whether those obligations are imposed upon us or not. When 'must' is used in legal contexts, we would still talk about it using 'have to'. For example: Law: You must wear your seat belt in the car. Driver: I have to wear my seat belt. Teacher: You must do your homework. Student: I have to do my homework.

In the UK highway code it says: "Drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross and MUST give way to pedestrians on a zebra crossing". I don't think they will ever change it to 'have to' but then I don't it's incorrect.
@EnglishWithEm
@EnglishWithEm 9 ай бұрын
It's not incorrect. There's a lot of crossover between 'must' and 'have to'. There's a limit to how much information one can get into a short, as the limit is 60 seconds, but I am planning on doing a longer video on the topic at some point. It's common for the rule maker to use 'must' while the rule follower uses 'have to'. Highway code: you must give way to pedestrians. Cyclist: I have to give way to pedestrians. Teacher: You must do your homework. Student: I have to do my homework.

Differenciating must and have to is often very confusing. The rules often depend on the contexts. Which of the sentences below are personal and external obligations? ~ I have to go to bed early on school nights. ~ I must go to bed early tonight if no, my mom will get mad at me. ~ I have to do my homework tonight so I can't go with you. ~ I must do my homework or I will be into trouble.
@EnglishWithEm
@EnglishWithEm 3 ай бұрын
Yes. It's a more complex area than can be fully covered in a video with a 60-second limit. I have looked at one aspect, which is talking about our obligations. In the above sentences, I would use 'have to' for all of them because they all refer to external obligations.

Hi, the verbs 'ban' and 'forbid' are synonymous. I can't think of any difference between them except that 'forbid' seems more formal to me, and is therefore less common. I've just checked in the corpus and, as I suspected, 'ban' is used much more frequently than 'forbid'. Actually, I have just thought of a difference. When we use the adjectives 'banned' and 'forbidden': Banned - something that was acceptable but has now been prohibited in a specific place/setting. The film was banned in the UK.✅ The film was forbidden in the UK. ❌ Forbidden - something that has been prohibited. It could be something that was previously acceptable, but it doesn't have to be. He's been forbidden from seeing his girlfriend. (previously acceptable). Smoking on hospital premises is strictly forbidden. (never acceptable - at least 'never' in our era). Also, there are some grammatical differences. A person can be banned from a place, but forbidden from entering a place. As it turns out, there are quite a few subtleties... I'll add it to my list of videos. 😊🌻

Are you sure? I mean, that is one difference, but I dont think it is the definitive difference between them. I think the primary distinction which is uniform across all dialects of English is that of intensity. “Must” is generally emphatic or used as an alternative to an imperative statement, whereas “have to” has a broader modal application. The example used isn’t wrong, I just disagree that it is the primary distinguishing quality between the two. (Not accounting for individual dialectal variation)
@EnglishWithEm
@EnglishWithEm 9 ай бұрын
Yes, I'm sure. The main distinction is whether we are talking about a personal or external obligation. I agree that there is more to the situation and this is deserving of a longer, more detailed video at some point. As you say, 'must' is often used for emphatic purposes, but this relates to advice rather than obligation. It is a stronger form of 'should'. You should try this chocolate. It's really nice. (advice) You must try this chocolate. It's amazing! (emphatic advice) You could also say 'You have to try this chocolate'. For me, this actually sounds more emphatic, though that may be subjective. There's a lot of crossover. It also depends on who is speaking. When talking about obligation, the rule maker often uses 'must', but the rule follower uses 'have to'. Teacher: You must do your homework. Student: I have to do my homework.

You weren't taught the wrong thing. There is a degree of crossover, particularly with 'must'. This deserves a longer video at some point to explain the subtleties. When people are talking about their own obligations, must is used for personal obligations. However, it also appears in formal rules/laws and is used by those in authority. To give a few examples: Teacher - you must do your homework. Student - I have to do my homework. Police officer - You must wear your seatbelt. Driver - I have to wear my seatbelt.

Some natives told me there is no differnce, they are the same. What do you think?
@EnglishWithEm
@EnglishWithEm 9 ай бұрын
They can be used interchangeably when talking about strong advice. I might say: This cake's amazing! You must try some / You have to try some. There's also some crossover when it comes to obligation. This often depends on who is speaking. For external rules, the rule maker often uses must, but the follower uses have to. Teacher: You must do your homework. Student: I have to do my homework. The student wouldn't say 'I must do my homework'. The meaning would be clear, but it sounds strange. For personal obligations, people sometimes mix them, but usually only when there is a negative consequence involved. I must/have to lose weight before the wedding because otherwise I won't fit into my dress. I'll do a longer video about this at some point. Shorts only allow for 60 seconds, so there's a limit to what you can cover.

This is all from grammar teacher perspective, but when you’re on the streets must is just more assertive that’s all…. I mean, if they can be used interchangeably then technically, there’s no difference. I just hate it when grammar books unnecessarily over complicate things for students.

You said the opposite of what most teachers say. They say that must is used for official rules and laws. You must wear a seat belt. Not you have to. I have to wear a seat belt. What do you think. I hope you won't ignore my comment.

Hi Jack. This is a complex area that requires more time than a short (max 60 seconds) allows. At some point, I will do a longer video on the topic. You're right that there are circumstances where 'must' refers to external obligation. Basically, it depends on who is speaking. My video is from the perspective of the person experiencing the obligation. Let me give you some examples: Teacher: You must wear your school uniform. Student. I have to wear a school uniform. Police officer: You must wear your seat belt. Driver: I have to wear wear my seat belt. When talking about our own obligations, we use 'have to' when the obligation is enforced externally, but 'must' when it is an obligation we impose upon ourselves. Let me know if you have any questions!🌻

@@EnglishWithEm Thank you so much for responding. That's exactly what I meant. Headmaster to students:"You must wear school uniform. Students:"We have to wear school uniform. Thank you again. I have a question related to the use of the causative if you don't mind. As far as I know, the causative is used when someone causes something to be done for him/her and not to him/her. I pay for the mechanic to repair my car. "I have my car repaired by the mechanic." But it is impossible for someone to pay for a thief to steal his car. So we can't say " He had his car stolen." I think only the passive is correct here. "His car was stolen." What do you think? Thanks in advance.

@@EnglishWithEm Thank you so much. Just because I am not a native speaker of the languge, I wasn't sure about it and I found it strange to use the causative with such things done TO us. I am really surprised. I think it is better to use the passive in such cases. Thank you again. Now I can teach it to my students in Syria ❤️💚🧡💙

@@jacksyria8712 You're very welcome. All the nuances of grammar can be confusing! Regarding whether it's better to use the passive voice or the causative passive in such cases, I think using the causative emphasises that what was done to us was beyond our control. I actually think it's more appropriate! 😊🌻
