I am a Taiwanese English teacher. (我是一個台灣的英文老師) The reason why my English is so good in comparsion with most of my fellow Taiwanese is that I have been constantly learning and practicing English. (我英文能力之所以比其他台灣大多數同胞來得強是因為我不間斷地學習與練習英文) Hopefully the average Emglish ability level for Taiwanese can improve a lot in the very near future. (希望台灣的平均英語實力能在不久的將來大大地進步) I have finished watching this video completely. (我已經完整地看完了這個影片) This video is awesome!!!! (這個影片棒呆了!!!) It is bloody useful!! (真是夭壽實用!!!) Big thanks to the teacher and all the fellow students around the world. (大大地感謝老師與所有其他國籍的學生)

Thank you for another great lesson, Alex! Such constructions were really confusing for me. In my language we just say "I did...", "I should do...", etc. when actually somebody else is supposed to do it.

I'm always amazed when I see people commenting on these vids from years ago. Happy to help! It's really tough starting out. You'll make plenty of mistakes, feel stressed when you don't know the answer to a question, but over time, you'll figure stuff out. And the more you study, the better. But...you probably already knew that. :p

Hello, Thanks for your great video.I want to ask you 2 questions, if you don't mind. 1-In the passive causative we don't have "make", and "let"?! 2-And what does 'have' and 'get' mean in the passive causative?! Does it have the same meaning on the active causative?! or not?! Have -> forced, get->persuade. Thanks

This is a very common structure that we use all the time! It is also very common in the future tense and also for the subject to be the doer of the action. Instead of "I will do my homework," we often say "I will get my homework done." It sounds less active and reflects the passive attitude of the doer and I think it is a bit more polite. It sounds more polite to say, "I will have the results put on your desk by Friday" than to say, "I will put the results on your desk by Friday."

@MarkHogan994

It was already repaired. "Had" is past tense. If you say "I will have my car repaired" or "I'm going to have/get it repaired", then it is about to be repaired.

You said there is no different between "get" and "have" but my teacher said that the difference is we use "get something done " to describe some elements of difficulty or a achievement involved in the meaning sense. whereas" have something done" to describe things we arranged to be done for us.As a result in describing unfortunate experience. Btw i don't know what does it mean?can you explain please 😢😢

Using "Have something done" is more formal than "Get something done". Normally, "get" is used for spoken English.

What about sentences like "I was made to deliver the heavy luggage by myself"? The heavy luggage needs to be delivered. Someone of no importance makes me do it, it would be me the one to deliver it. And let's add the phase "by myself" or "on my own", meaning no-one is going to coop with me to do it. What should I say, from my point of view. Being me who does the action of delivering, and the one who is also assigned to do that action. The original sentence would be in Japanese 自分で重い荷物を運ばされました Notice that the subject "I" is being ellipted

Hello Alex! Could you help me with understanding these sentences, what kind of grammar is it? - 1.We watched the army march through the town. 2. I heard him shout. 3. Watch me do this. They aren't causative structures or...? Thanks in advance!
@engvidAlex
@engvidAlex 6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I've never thought about it beyond causative verbs like make, have, let, and help, but I suppose there are other verbs that use that "subject + verb + object + base verb" structure. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of this form. The only resource that comes kind of close to explaining it is this one here: www.businessenglishresources.com/learn-english-for-business/student-section/student-handouts/infinitive-vs-gerund-combining-two-verbs/ (it's at the very bottom) But even here, it's incomplete. Sorry, I wish I could help more!
