Nice video, very specific to my question. I wanted to focus more on specific sounds certain foreigners have problems with, not grammar. Maybe this can be fun for you.

Not all of those mistakes are made by everyone, though. Polish has both /v/ and /w/ as phonemes so Poles don't struggle with them. And Bulgarians, Macedonians, and Romanians have definite articles so they do use them correctly most of the time.

Take Polish language as an example, vowels' sounds are consistent. Most of my Polish friends mispronounced some English words because of this reason. Once my student said "cat" but for me it sounded like "cart".. Another common mistake is that some Polish words look/sound like English words but actually there're differences. For example, "kolega" in Polish can be either "friend" or "colleague", therefore, sometimes when I'm in a shop, the staff tells me "My friend will help you" or when I'm with my friends, they say "my colleague told me..." but they mean their "friend"... It's always interesting to see how our mother tongues influence when we speak a foreign language.

Thanks for your comment! European languages have lots of "false friends" that can interfere with a second language but there are also lots of similarities that can help us.

Polish just has far fewer vowels than English - only 8 and basically no diphthongs. For some bizarre reason most Polish books for ESL focus so much on 'th' sounds which are far less important than vowels. Most Poles aren't even aware there are more than 8 vowel sounds. Also, about the first point /w/ is represented by letter 'ł' and /v/ by letter 'w' - it may add to the confusion as both sounds exist in Polish.

@@LeanEnglishPronunciation oh that's so bizzare! My hearing must be a tad impaired then 💁‍♀️ Thanks for your response anyway. :) I'm a trainee therapist and a freelance EFL tutor as well and I landed here somewhat accidentally as I've been researching the distinctions between "eastern European" and "Eastern European" and the findings are quite inconclusive as they seem to depend of further socio-economic/georgaphical/historical categorisations.

@@radkam8011 No worries, thanks for your comment! By 'eastern European' I was referring to slavic languages in this video.

I don't think you are right in saying that you never use "will" directly after "if". What about polite requests, for example: If you will give me another chance, I will appreciate it? I know that's a specific situation and an exception. Yet, it exists. Besides, why do you put stress on the second syllable in "gerund"? The dictionaries and phoneticians I know put stress on the first syllable.
@LeanEnglishPronunciation

There are some rare instances when we use 'will' after the if clause but I've never heard them spoken by a native speaker, see this article: www.grammarly.com/blog/will-would-in-if-clause/ You're correct, 'gerund' is stressed on the first syllable.

You mispronounce the word “gerund’. It bears the stress on the first syllable, not the second!
