Welcome to English in a Minute! If you split something, you divide it. So, what does it mean to split the difference?
AM: Andrew, last night at a friend’s house, I broke her expensive vase. Now she wants me to buy her a new one.
AS: Well, it was your fault.
AM: No, it wasn’t. It was right near where we were disco dancing!
AS: Well, in that case, split the difference. You both pay half.
AM: Yeah, I guess we both were to blame.
When you split the difference, two people agree to pay what they both think is fair.
They generally take the average of two proposed amounts. And that’s English in a Minute!
