My tip to identify the stressed syllable in a word is to say the word out loud as if I was calling the name of a person who is really far from me and has the same name as the word. The syllable that takes longer to be pronounced is the stressed one. For exemple , Your name Rachel has two syllables when I say RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAchel I notice that the first syllable takes much longer to be pronounced. I spend more time saying the first syllable Ra . Now let's suppose I have a friend named Captivate who is across the street THEN I say: CAAAAAAAAAAAptivate come over here or a word like caPRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIcious , or emBRAAAAAAAAAAAce or aMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAzing. It sounds a little bit silly but it works for me.

@funfurfreak No, that's not true. Many unstressed syllables have the 'ih' as in 'sit' sound, for example. And many have dipthongs, for example, escalate -- the last syllable is unstressed, and has the 'ay' as in 'say' diphthong.

Rachel, I heard someone once said that ALL unstressed syllables, like, I, E A, O within a word are pronounced like the schwa. What do you think of it? Thanks!
