I’ve only ever ridden western. I almost never get to ride, I don’t do lessons or anything, but I go on trail rides, summer camps, and I volunteer as much as I can. I’m starting to volunteer at a new place and they use English saddles. I’m so excited to get to learn about English saddles too :D

There are a couple of "Dressage vs Western" videos where riders from each discipline come out on their horses, perform a little, then switch horses and work in the other discipline. They are fun videos and basically prove that good riding is good riding, no matter what style you prefer.

@@jadestacey3802 My wife is English rider, and has never been comfortable in a Western saddle. They throw her weight backward, and she's miserably unhappy. If necessary, she just takes off a Western saddle and rides bareback. Of course, being a cowgirl is a whole other game! That's when you need a Western saddle!

Ok this is not intended to be hate but, a common misconseption about western is that you are supposed to sit every gait. This is only for certain events like reining,cutting,western pleasure etc. In other events you ride in a more foword seat like if you were riding english, also in the trot you post (Idk that might be a western term) I just have seen this so often when english riders try western and they try to slouch which I have only ever seen men do so yeah, and then they hate and say western riders slouch when they have only ever watched roping and someone that can't ride. With the roping you don't sit strait up because you are throwing a rope and you are going to have to make a hard stop most of the time so if you are going to say that try sit all the way up like normal, throw a rope and then stop.

I ride both but mostly Western so just a bit of advice if you ever wanted to ride Western again 1. He may be confused when you're riding because he can't feel you as well as he can with an English saddle, so try to keep a little more contact through the leg 2. Your rein was a little short at certain points, which I get because you're an English rider, but if you were on a Western trained horse it would probably be very uncomfortable or confused at that length Other than that, great job!
@ImJin-la

The thing about Western saddles is that they can be used for longer rides and work. English saddles are good for jumping and dressage. For me, English saddles are more comfortable and I’m used to them. I’ve done pole bending before, but on an English saddle and at a walk. I haven’t done it at a trot yet.

I have been a western rider all my life and a year ago I decided to teach my self how to ride English. It was fun but not easy. I took several bad falls it was my own fault and I learned a lot for it( number one there is a reason for wearing a helmet). I now enjoy riding English just as much as western.
