Good Morning Professor. In this lesson two sentences were used. The first one is The door was locked and The gate was open.Both sentences used different words after the the verb be that is locked and open.Could you please explain why did it happen.

No your interpretation of action verb is not correct. Sit and stand are action. Imagine if someone sits on a bench.Before sitting that person's position must be different. He must have been walking or running. From walking or running he changes his position to sitting. So sitting in a place is an action. When some effort is exerted to change his position that is an action. Consider following verb. He is a teacher. He is an In dian. He is handsome. In these example no effort ( physical) is taken by the subject to come to present position. Hence they are not considered action verb
