He also played important parts in two Chushingura films before he joined TOEI. I remembered that he portrayed Okano Kin'yemon and Koheita Mori in these films. He was also in the all-star production of "Nippon Tanjou" and in other period films with Machiko Kyō, Misora Hibari (Sword of Destiny) Toshiro Mifune (Saga of the Vagabonds, The Yagyu Scrolls) etc.
Thank you very much for this two- part story with Mr Tsuruta. Regarding jidaigeki films, I remember that he also played important roles in two Chushingura films, in "Nippon Tanjou", in the "Yagyu Scrolls", the "Miyamoto Musashi" series as Sasaki Kojiro, in the "Jirochou Shimizu" series, two films with Misora Hibari and others. I am not Japanese but I like these films and remember them very well. I first saw him as Sasaki Kojiro and I was very impressed. In my opinion, he was a very good actor and I have always enjoyed his films. But I followed his work for another reason as well: his clear enunciation and smooth voice, even when speaking in dialect. These are very important for a foreigner, such as myself, who wants to learn the Japanese language. Again, thank you very much.
He also played Nemuri Kyōshiro in 3 films, Naruto in the Naruto Hichō (鳴門秘帖) films, Konomura Daikichi, Isami Kondo in the 1974 Shinsengumi production, as well as other jidaigeki characters.

This is not story of samurai fighter. This is a story of vagabond yakuza. In old days yakuza vagabond took journey and they could stay in a stable of yakyza boss instead of their reinforcement when the boss must battle against enemy boss stable. At the time yakuza bosses had each territory all over Japan. So each privaye yakuza could trip on yakuza line which very organized as well as now. And yakuza could get money by gambling. You must distinguish what yakuza and samurai or casual people.
