I love learning about how to make stuff we take for granted. Products we think are complicated to make or made from ingredients out of our reach. Like learning lost skills; making useful products at home gives us a little more confidence. Thank you for the lessons.

Hugh, I made medium blue shoe polish today when my bees wax pellets came. I made the bees wax & oil with blue wax crayon. Difficulty finding blue polish. Had only olive oil at home but with only 50 gms used it wasn’t a huge expense. My shoes never looked better with a soft glow. The shoes look new, Thank you so much. Took me 15 min. I've just discovered your channel and am thoroughly enjoying your videos. Shoe polish seems so mundane but as small supermarkets don't carry it and places like Woolworths & now Wilkos have disappeared from the hight street, I struggled to find it locally recently. Knowing I can rustle it up from from ingredients I already have is great. Also, I just love hearing/learning about how much more capable we are than we are led to believe. It's nice to hear such everyday making explored in a matter of fact way that neither gate keeps old know-how or patronises the listener.

Crazy, but in today's society so many folks have never polished shoes. It seems that , once they get scuffed and have minor wear, they just get discarded or end up at car boot sales ... where all my footwear has come from ;

@@mrsmscuriositycabinet6925 It absolutely drives me mad seeing this societal decline. I was brought up to make do and mend and to waste nothing. Thanks for the video! I go through quite a lot of shoepolish and I will definately give it a try. There is an easier way to get an even darker black pigment than grinding charcoal into a powder. Just collect the fine soot from the flame of an oil lamp, you'll get a ready to use, almost pure carbon black pigment. (thats how they used to make tattoo ink in prisons from baby oil and a toilet paper wick in a tin)

Loved the shoe polish video. How about 'shoe cream'? I'm told that shoe cream is better for my best-quality leather boots and shoes since polish is supposed to trap moisture (I suppose) -- while it protects the leather is doesn't condition it. Opinions?

Thank you sir for the informative video. A quick question if you know. Disposable hand warmers are basically iron dust. Can that be used after use?

Wow.. where have I been, this channel is great... Is there a substitute for the bee wax, if I can't lay my hand on wax, is candle an option?
@EnglishCountryLife
@EnglishCountryLife Жыл бұрын
Hi Humprey! Thank you for those kind words. plain white unscented candles are normally made of paraffin wax. It's not as good as beeswax (which you can buy on Amazon) but will work in a pinch although you may have to adjust the proportions of other ingredients to get the right level of hardness.

I love to see how make water proof ( snow proof ) clothes. I buy a sintetic coat for winter and just don't work as I need to be dry on winter. you know water and cold weather is a deadly combination . so I'm trying to make a winter cape ( yes maybe is easier to buy a new coat but for now I'm not planning to travel 1200 km to find one ) plastic capes don't work because wind blows all the time an I need something heavy that stay in place

Super, could you make a video about making leather repair products, I have also heard of waxes and polishes that contain Rosins and turpentines, do you have a video explaining products that use these ingredients?
@EnglishCountryLife

Hi Andrew, we do use real turpentine in the polish video below kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGOvd5aJjL95gpY We do use roisins and gums but I haven't videoed that (yet!) Hugh

I have been looking for burgundy coloured shoe polish in my region but to no avail. I thank you for sharing this video as i will now make my own. Can i use a mixture of fabric dye powder to get a perfect match?
@EnglishCountryLife
@EnglishCountryLife 11 ай бұрын
Hi! I definitely wouldn't use fabric dye, but you can certainly colour match. Search for "burgundy mineral pigment" or "burgundy oxide pigment" near you. It's often found with soap making supplies. Mineral pigments are inert & won't stain or run. In an emergency you can achieve a lot by grating in wax crayons, but it's not the best choice
