There's quite deep subtle meaning. The song isn't only about immigrants, it's rather about all people who are not like others in any society. I love this song especially because of "be yourself no matter what they say". Melody's moving as well.

@@angelesrubioandreu5390 I think he means that you act in an superior way when you don't react with violence to an offense (a man doesn't need a GUN to prove he's a man) , when you don't give importance to people's opinion, you just smile and walk away. What is important is to be true to yourself and what you belive in. This in how a real man acts.

'Takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile' Wow 😮 powerful lyrics, it means it's your reaction to things that matters, if you don't allow peoples ignorance to offend you and you just smile as a way of ignoring it, then it makes you the bigger person. Or in this case a gentlemen. .....that verse that has that part is really good. The whole lyrical content of this song is amazing though 👌👍....it's as if it teaches you something and gives you valuable information, also speaks about individuality and the enviroment too.

Haven’t we all presumed that the “Englishman in New York” (1987-1988) was Sting himself⁉️ Well, in fact, the song is about iconic author Quentin Crisp and his outcasting after he moved to New York. Sting had met Crisp and the latter facetiously told the singer-songwriter that he looked forward to obtaining his naturalisation papers so that he could commit a crime and not be deported. What kind of crime? Crisp’s tongue-in-cheek reply : “Something glamorous, non violent, with a dash of style. Crime is so rarely glamorous these day.” CLASSIC ENGLISH HUMOUR‼️ 🇬🇧💙🗽
