Wow, what a wonderful, controlled contralto. The story always was the Sullivan felt that Gilbert's libretto 'wrote' the music too, but this is surely just a beautiful melody on its own right...

Now would be the perfect time to broadcast these treasures in FULL, not excerpts.... The ENO is the only major opera house to not provide its audience a streaming of some of its best productions (and this is one of them !).

How nice to hear a real contralto in this role. Got news for you, folks: a mezzo and a contralto are not the same!

I'd call her a mezzo. If you want to hear a proper contralto then you have to go back to the likes of Bertha Lewis.
