Top Tips
Be specific (read closely, give details, etc.)
Read poetry like prose and vice versa
Read every question carefully
MCQ (terms etc.)
Don’t discount simpler answers
Partly wrong = all wrong (MC)
Roman numeral T/F, THEN choose answer
Terms:
o Irony
o Hyperbole
o Connotation
o Allusion
o Juxtaposition
o Satire
o Invective
o Aphorism
o Prolepsis
o Synesthesia
o Bildungsroman
o Imagery
Essays
Be readable
Be specific
Use organization (paragraphs)
Start with a hook (don’t rephrase the prompt)
Make your thesis statement obvious
Answer the entire question (don’t forget the “overall meaning” part)
Quote evidence if the passage is provided
Avoid summary
Explain why your specific comments and observations matter
Use your prepared works for the Open Question, not the listed works
o Review the turning point scenes in depth
o Know names and order of events

I'm writing about one of the Sherlock Holmes novels for the open question tomorrow and no one can stop me!!! I know it's not technically classic literature but i do not care! I will fight to the death to defend Sherlock's literary merit even outside of detective fiction! I've been hopelessly obsessed with the stories for months and have read them cover to cover and can quote them directly!!! AP graders will bend to my will rahhhh

My teach said that you can write about anything as long as it has complexity, even the chronicles of Narnia can be accepted if done well enough so you do that and get a 5!

A counter claim isn’t necessary. As long as you fulfill your thesis and evidence points it’s a guaranteed 5/6. to get sophistication that could maybe be doing a counterclaim

Your channel popped into my yt feed (I'm subscribed to another "Classic Books" channel, btw). I did a quick roll through your past vids. I saw one from 2 years ago on active vs passive voice. I was interested because I got "dinged" on my own AP essays loooong ago but never rec'd instruction on what it exactly was (just the terrible "red pencil" note in the margin) or how to rewrite the thought. It's bugged me ever since and as you noted Google isn't good, quick or easy on the topic. Your existing vid, while a GREAT topic, was a bit "rough". Would you consider a redo with better/ more complex examples? Thanks

My teacher basically just told us to know 4 AP list books really well for the free response essay. Cant really study for anything else. And, if you know 4 books super well, at least one of them is probably gonna work for the prompt.

My teacher has taught us to skip the ones that take over 30 seconds to answer. Since we’re doing it on computer this year, there’s an option to flag a question and go back. Pretty much answer as many “easy” ones as you can and with time remaining, go back to the flagged ones and either guess or if you have considerable amount of time left, try to get the right answer :) remember you can pass with a 30/50 on mcqs and 4-5 on all essays
