Nice to meet you, Keith, I'm Castor from Spain although these days I'm living and working in England. This is my first time watching your blog, thanks to Vicky advice, and I must say it was fantastic. I'm also really grateful to you for the useful pdf "Avoid the most common mistakes in IELTS speaking" that I could download, for sure it will help me preparing B2 First exam. I really appreciate the effort you make in this blog for all English students and I'm excited about watching your next videos. Kind regards.

Hi Castor, thank you for the feedback. I think you are right a lot of the tips on approaching the exam and learning the language are the same for the Cambridge suite of exams, like FCE and ACE. Delighted it is helping and hope you are enjoying the English weather and food 🥴!

I like the calm and comfortable atmosphere of this test. I wonder if all the English tests are this smooth. I almost felt like if Keith was my good friend and we were talking about life during lunch :D This kind of friendly behavior helps to get rid of nerves and feel relaxed. Now I feel more confident about my English as I was able to notice that difference of American language in PART 2. Thank you for simplifying the way of learning English and encouraging people with your own examples!

Glad you like it Roman. As an IELTS examiner, I try to be in the moment, every moment of the test and just let the candidate be, I think it's the ideal way to get the best out of them. I' d say it can also help the candidate if they themselves think of the test as a conversation with a friend. In my experience many examiners are really friendly (although maybe not all), and want to see the candidate do their best.

From her own introduction, it was easy to guess she would get a band 9 score! Besides she is a teacher, she have written several books. That is really a huge source of vocabulary and grammar. I have watched other videos from this channel of English teachers doing IELTS. What about a normal person who is not a teacher, for example a pop artist or a sportsperson? Would they got a band 9? Or maybe a band 6?

Hi keith, You are doing absolutely amazing job here on youtube. And i would like to thanks for that,But keith i believe this is very easy for a native speaker to speak fluently with accuracy. Although he/she does not know about the question or topic in questionair. I could be wrong though. So, what peace of advice you would like to give to those students or English language lerners. Who really do not have english speaking environment or the oppurtunity to speak with some native speaker ?
@EnglishSpeakingSuccess5 жыл бұрын
Speak with other students, and even speak with yourself. The secret is to keep practicing and actual say the words out loud. Of course, if there are chances to speak with a native speaker, then that can help build confidence too.
@TheRealTricky5 жыл бұрын
I guess it's kinda odd to do a language exam for non-native speakers while you are a native speaker yourself. But I did sometimes wonder. I'm from the Netherlands and here we got some kind of integration exam foreigners must pass in order to be allowed to stay here permanently (especially when you want to take on the Dutch nationality), and the exam is not only about the language but also about the Dutch culture, and I really wonder how well I would perform there. Somehow I got the feeling I'd fail..... terribly, haha! This exam doesn't look too hard, and I'm not sure how well I'd do, but I guess when I was a native English speaker I'd be more nervous than I would be now (since I guess it's obvious my first language is Dutch) just because everyone watches me, and then being a native speaker I think failing the exam would be kinda embarrassing. I got the feeling that Vicki was kinda nervous and hiding it well. Now I'm not sure about English, and I hate grammar nazis, but some mistakes I hear people make in Dutch (by native speakers, and I never heard a foreigner make that mistake, to make it worse) it sometimes makes me cry. I wonder if it was really an advantage for Vicki to be a native speaker herself....
@EnglishSpeakingSuccess5 жыл бұрын
Some really good points and ideas TheRealTricky. I think Vicki was a little nervous, not about her language ability, but maybe about being able to get good ideas for the answers. IELTS doesn't test quality of ideas though, (but obviously you need stuff to talk about), it just measures your language ability. As Vicki said, it was a great insight into how her students doing IELTS might feel. Sometimes exams and interviews are also about psychology (not getting nervous, believing in yourself) as well as language!
@TheRealTricky5 жыл бұрын
@@EnglishSpeakingSuccess Yup, psychology indeed. I once did a kind of fake-driving-exam, as preparation for a real exam, and man, one mistake after another. Driving too fast, noticing red traffic lights too late and more stuff I would never do when I was driving a car from home to work, or anything like that, and the kind of road I didn't fear at all was the motorway, and that was also the place were I made no mistakes at all. I guess stress was the deciding factor there indeed. And yes, I must respect Vicki for taking this exam on and that she now experienced what her students go through. However (I take it you are Keith himself) I must give a thumbs of for your calmness and not really looking like an examiner, but rather as a friendly guy having a conversation. Maybe a bit scripted, but still. Is a lot better than the evil laugh my English teacher had when announcing a test, back in my teenage years (but I gotta note that teacher was a bit crazy). Somehow I am tempted to take on this exam myself. I hope it doesn't matter I mix UK and US English up a bit (although I'm closer to US English)... I will definitely dig up some more info about this :)
@EnglishSpeakingSuccess5 жыл бұрын
@@TheRealTricky Hi - yes, I am Keith :-) and really the IELTS test is best seen as relaxed conversation with a friend. Your English teacher sounds slightly crazy...it's actually really important (I think) to help students relax and gain confidence. Good luck if you try the test, and it doesn't matter if you have US or UK accent, or even mixed up, the important thing is clear pronunciation, rather than accent.
@TheRealTricky5 жыл бұрын
@@EnglishSpeakingSuccess Well my English teacher announced test with an evil laugh. My Dutch teacher always spoke of a "tropical surprise covered in chocolate sauce" when he announced the next test. I guess I had a lot of crazy teachers. Thank you for your clarifications, Keith. Opinions varied a lot about my English. Some say it's fantastic, others called it "beyond terrible", so maybe it's a good thing I know how I can properly test it (and it's a bit of a personal challenge as well. Sometimes we just wanna KNOW how good we are) ;)

@EnglishSpeakingSuccess5 жыл бұрын
I would give her a 9. There are some hesitations, (as she says at the end of the video - it is sometimes hard to think of ideas quickly), but hesitations are ok even at band 9, so long as they are 'content related rather than to find words or grammar'. (Quotes from the IELTS Band Descriptors).

@EnglishSpeakingSuccess5 жыл бұрын
Hi Rodrigo, well you can apply online at ieltsregistration.britishcouncil.org/test-chooser or at a local test centre, but first you need to be clear why you want to do it - for fun, to study abroad, to immigrate? This will help you decide whether you take academic or general exam. Also BEFORE you book a test, get some advice on your present level and the level you need (for example, to study at a certain university). Make sure you give yourself enough time to prepare for the exam, and to get your English to the level you need. Good luck!

It is not acceptable for ielts i think. what i am trying to say is that.... another interesting feature that i would like to pin point would be... put it in other word.. in-addition... another factor which worth mentioning is ... can be used instead of the word (and). let my know your opinion please.

I think IELTS is a strange English test. No one in real life speaks like that, or asks strange questions about your sleeping schedule. Also British people are very hard to entertain, that’s probably why people get low score in the speaking and writing section of this test. Lol
