BEING VS BEEN
1. BEING is a present participle of the verb "To BE".
1. BEEN is the past participle of the verb "TO BE".
2. BEING is used in only present continuous and past continuous tense.
2. BEEN is used in simple perfect and perfect continuous tenses.
• He is being smart. (Present continuous)
• I was being sarcastic. (Past continuous)
• I am being supported by some people. (Present continuous, passive voice)
• I was being supported by some people. (Past continuous, passive voice)
• I have been teaching English for 5 years. (Present perfect continuous)
• She had been waiting for 2 hours when the train arrived. (Past perfect continuous)
• I will have been living in New York when you finish your college. (Future perfect continuous)
• My house has been refurbished. (Present perfect, passive voice)
• The train had been left before she reached the station. (Past perfect, passive voice)
3. Both BEING and BEEN can function as both a helping and a main verb.
BEING as a main verb
• He is being smart.
• You are being funny.
BEING as a helping verb
• We are being told not to move out of our house. (Present continuous, passive voice)
• The government is telling us not to move out of our house. (Present continuous, active voice)
BEEN as a main verb
• He has been my mentor for a long time.
Has - helping verb
Been - main verb(stative)
• He has been very supportive.
Has - helping verb
Been - main verb(stative)
BEEN as a helping verb
• I have been teaching English for 5 years.
Have, been - helping verb
Teaching - main verb(action)
• She had been waiting for 2 hours when the train arrived.
Had, been - helping verb
Waiting - main verb(action)
BEEN or BEING followed by an action verb - helping verb
BEEN or BEING followed by an adjective or a noun - main verb
4. BEING can work as a gerund but BEEN can't.
Gerund: a progressive verb, V1+ing, that functions as a noun in a sentence.
• Being a teacher puts lots of responsibilities on your shoulder.
Subject - being a teacher
• I don't hate being corrected.
Object of the verb 'hate' - being corrected
5. BEING can be used in a present participle clause and BEEN in a perfect participle clause.
BEING
• Being scared of dogs, I stay away from them.
Alternative:- Because I am scared if dogs, I stay away from them.
• Salman, being an army officer, does a lot of charity work.
Alternative:- Salman, who is an army officer, does a lot of charity work.
BEEN
• Having been beaten brutally, she couldn't walk.
Alternative:- Because she was beaten brutally, she couldn't walk.
• Having been cut from the company, I started my own business.
Alternative:- After the company sacked me, I started my own business.
6. BEING can be used as a word alone in a sentence. It means "existence or life". BEEN doesn't give any meaning on it's own.
