well, english is a nasty mix of several other languages, so it often borrows words from different languages, and since they each have their own conventions for what sound a collection of letters is supposed to make, it often leads to circumstances with different sounds for the same letters, which might be the cause for inconsistency. Keep in mind that I'm no linguist, so if there's any floating around in these comments please tell me if I got it right.

Of course there are reasons why these words are different in spelling and pronunciation! Of course linguists of English know the differences! It's ludicrous to suggest otherwise. Also, the instructor is wrong about "slough". The "slew" pronunciation is the opposite of what he says; it is for marshy land. The "sluff" pronunciation is for "casting off or shedding". Some Americans will use the spelling "sluff" for the second meaning, but "slough" is still very much preferred. (Most people will use "shed" or "molt" or "flake off" in conversation.) I'm a well-educated American English major from an Ivy League school, and I've traveled and lived in all major regions of the country. I've never heard or seen anyone use "slough" in the geographic meaning (either as noun or verb) except for John Bunyan in his 18th-century novel *The Pilgrim's Progress*, which no one reads anymore unless forced to in a class. (The words most closely associated with "slough" that would be used in American English are "marsh", which is strictly geographical, or "quagmire" if figurative, especially when dealing with the impossibility of getting out of a massively difficult situation that could have been avoided with a little bit of learning, thought, or wisdom. Therefore, it's often used with countries at war where they shouldn't be, as the U.S. so often is.) So if you learn American English, you can forget about "slough" in the geographic sense. However, "slough/sluff" is used, more often in its verbal form, both in writing and speech. It usually refers to snakes and other animals but is also used when people are describing symptoms of skin ailments or in figurative ways. For instance, a woman might say, "I'm trying to slough off all the memories of my ex." She's most likely thinking of those memories as a skin keeping her from growing into someone better, so like a snake she'll shed that skin and emerge "reborn", with new room for growth and freedom and power. However, she could be thinking of a more gradual flaking off of layers. Also, "donut" isn't the only spelling of "doughnut" in the U.S. You'll usually see the first spelling in commercial signage, but it isn't what you'll always see. The instructor failed to mention that a common American informal spelling for "through" is "thru", as in "Drive Thru (Window)" at restaurants or "thruway" for some major roads. Americans also use "thru" when writing a quick note to someone they know fairly well or to an employee. So if in doubt, spell it out.

Sorry for the late reply, but I'm going to explain it to you as best I can. For lock, you say it like L(OCK) (if you know how to say 'flock', think of it that way, without the F at the beginning). For luck, you say it like L(UCK) (think of the word 'yuck', only instead of a Y, replace it with an L). Hope this helps :-) Good luck with learning English!
