Dr. Paul Petersen shares ideas to read the Gospel of Mark with the greatest benefit.
1. Get an overview of the book in total. A quick extensive reading without sidestepping into exciting or difficult details.
2. Read consecutively the sections of the book piece by piece, for instance the first 15 verses as one blok of text.
3. Ask questions of the text: write down words and expressions you might need to have explained.
4. Divide your text section into minor pieces.
5. Give these minor pieces as well as your chosen section headings, indicating the basic content of the texts.
6. Reflect on what the text tells you about …
o What happened? Historical, social, and religious background
o How it is told by the author to his first intended audience
o Theology: how God / Jesus is, and how God speaks to you today through this text
7. Take note of repetitions.
o Persons or groups of persons, words and expressions, situations or themes
8. Begin and finish all reading of Scripture with thanks for God’s revelation and prayers for His Spirit to illuminate your mind.
