5 years later and you helped me earn brownie points with the wife for “being so handy” fixing this problem in our printer. 😝

The previous owner installed a new set of toner costing £200 but sold it (HL-4050CDN) to me for £50 as he cannot clear the 'Unable Print 32' error message. I first read up about the printer then went to various forum on the internet including Brother website. They were suggesting I should check, clear and clean the inside for jam paper or foreign object that might be inside. I did all that but still no luck in clearing the error message. Then I came across you video. It saved the day! It is exactly how you described it. The 'paddle' inside was sticking. I apply a small piece of sellotape to the foam pad and it sorted the problem. Just can't believe it. It costs me less than 10 pence of material to solve the problem. Thank you very much for sharing your video.

Videos like these are special. Selfless with no fluff, just an informative video helping his fellow printererer. This 'tape over the fuzzy pad' (new band name btw) works for 4040CDN also. Thank you!!

This StepbyStep recommendation is simple and on point, thank you for the help with the "unable print 32 error" fix I'm back in business

Thanks Brook. Your excellent step-by-step instructional video worked for me and 'fixed' my 'Unable Print 32' issue. After having searched diligently for non-existent paper jams and possible unknown stickers within the moving parts somewhere (as recommended by Brother), I was perplexed that it might even be a driver update issue; however, the printer needs to work before the update can be implemented. So, I decided to Google Brother HL-4040CN 'Unable Print 32' and discovered your video. Well, I'm glad that I did, as I have about $200 in new replacement toners which I can now still use if need to...thanks for your help.

Amazing. This video let me recover a perfectly good printer that would have otherwise gone to the dump, so because some foam got sticky. This is the "social good" side of KZbin

This Totally WORKED! Thank you Soooo Very MUCH! I would say that even if you "think" your lever may not be sticking, go ahead and apply the tape anyway. I wasn't exactly sure what I was looking for or expecting and thought the lever worked fine, but realized after a firmer push on the lever that it was, indeed sticking. So I applied the tape and VOILA! It was the fix needed. Thank you again!

Thank you very much ! Like your channel name says, you are kind. I was about to throw away my Brother HL4050CDN - after power cycling it over a hundred times, with ever less success. Unbelievable that it all comes down to such a tiny detail. It makes me curious - how did *you* ever find this knowledge ? Is this like a trade secret among printer service technicians ? My findings when following your procedure : 1. I doubt that it's necessary to remove the slide with toner cartridges and the transfer belt, from the front side. This whole intervention takes place at the rear side. 2. I was a little too rough when removing the rimmed black plastic part at 1:45, and actually "broke it" loose. It's locked by two small fins at either edge, which I didn't notice among all the other blackness :-) Not a big deal however, it still fits quite securely back in position. 3. The "moving paddle" is TINY - I despaired at first, thinking that my printer model didn't even have this part. It's no larger than 1/3 of an inch ? It's hard to find too, being impractical to reach from the rear. My impression is that the exact movement of this paddle is a 90-degree rotation around a hinge : from flat down, to upright. A spring is supposed to push it back down, and that's where things go wrong. Just like you described in your audio commentary, in its vertical position, it remain stuck against the foam pad. 4. So, the foam pad that needs to be covered to neutralize its stickiness, is also vertically upright. 5. After completing the procedure, my printer worked again, just like in the old days. Thank you again - and no thanks to Brother, with their useless "Error 32 Unable to print - please power cycle" :-[

I started getting "Print unable 32 error" for the past one month, my usual toner, drum cleanup didn't fix it. Today I came across this video and that saved my printer for now. I ran into another issue when I closed up everything, got error "No Fuser unit found" I had to remove the fuser unit one more time and put it back. Make sure its making electrical contact. I appreciate this video, otherwise I would have bought a new printer costing another 200$ and preventing a printer unit from ending up in electronic scrap yard.

You can do this from the front. I took out the two trays, put the piece of tape on the top of the black gate (where it contacts the metal). Worked ! Thanks for the video.

Just an adjunct to this for all those people pulling their hair out as to why their machine may not be working. Had the accursed 32 error appear last week. Checked the tape I had place in the machine as per this video 7 months age to see if it had come adrift but it was OK. Issue turned out to be the Belt Unit & waste toner cartridge in the machine got to their used by date. Cost me in parts around $180.00 Aust. This video mentions these items when you are taking apart the machine. My trusty old 4040cn is now working again, as good as ever!

good video, i had this issue last time and applied this fix and it worked for a couple of years. This time it was a little scrap of paper stuck on the little flapper behind the pad by an inch or so.

I had a JAM TRAY 1 error. I contacted Brother support. They had me clean the paper tray pickup roller and pad, but that did not help. Then had me check for debris front and back, and toner carriers, belt. No change, Then they told me I would need to replace my HL-4050CDN. I had also tried the tape on the solnoid trick - NG. So then I vigourouses cleaned the long 2 part roller on the front cover, and it works now. !!!!

Thank You very much. This works on the MFC9840cdw too. I just removed the rubber bump pad. The printer will make a sharp 'click' now. Not sure if it will damage anything by doing this. I didn't want to use tape as this area gets hot. Thanks again!

THANK YOU sir. I fixed my HL4040CN in about an hour thanks to your video. And Brother, damn you, really curse you, with all due respect, for the cryptic error that is not even related to a paper jam and the lack of information on your website. I've had this printer collecting dust for the past 6 freaking years with an Error 32. This morning, I just gave this paper weight a last chance (and thanks again to "Enjoy Life But Be Good"''s awesome video). A piece of tape was the fix? why don't you suggest that on your troubleshooting page, Brother (I am serious here. This is frustrating). Regards,

Is the paddle supposed to bounce towards the front of the printer (paper tray side) and not to stick to the pad towards the back. In my case it bounces back fine (it is not sticking to the back) towards the front of the printer and I am assuming I don't have this sticky issue. However I saw a paper jammed in the back of the printer as I was following these instructions. I am assuming that this is the reason for my "Unable Print 32" message (who came up with that?) and putting everything back again. Crossing my fingers hoping it will fix the issue.

Thanks for the video, fix seemed to work until i turned it on an sadly it didn't work which probably means the switch is faulty but guess i have to add that too 100s of dollars of replacement parts i was provided with in un-opened boxes that were all damaged at some stage during there life. Guess now i have to pay HP some extreme price for ink when i had easily a few 1000s pages i could of printed...but having a career in IT this is def one of those moments you get annoyed at for time wasting lol
